Hate to go down the classic OCUK route of blaming the op but I definitely get the feeling we're not getting the full story here.

It seems weird that the engineer would go to the trouble of formally reporting you abusing them if you just asked them to leave the house. Virgin must know that once they sent this letter they will lose you as a customer so there must be more to this.

If it was a third party contractor they would have actively turned down getting paid for the visit by refusing to do the job for feeling unsafe/ being abused, most people in the trade would have just let whatever you say go over their head within reason as they have to cope with grumpy customers all the time. Because a call center has promised them one thing and its out of what the installer can do (Many magical things are promised by call center staff that just isnt possible), they automatically decide to jump down the person who's theres throat.
In other words you either had a very timid installer, which will get picked up eventually by whichever company she works for as they will be filing complaints against customers left right and centre or you went that bit further than the normal grumpy customer and said something or did something that bit more than the norm.
