OcUK Mafia game thread - Game 3

The last few posts echo my thoughts too. We need to let at least 1 night pass before we investigate things further. Obviously that just makes us weaker going forward though :(

I take it we have to lynch someone?
If votes start going out then you can see how people behave...
As Egon said IF we picked someone in the Mafia by luck then they would start chirping in, you could also assume that if we did not then you would not see as much protest...
Of course there are tactics that can be used to make people assume things, but you get the idea

Well the usual tactic has been to lynch the quietest/least active person. That hasn't proved a successful tactic in the past. But tbh, I don't really have a better alternative.

Personally I think with only a 25% chance of guessing right it's a bit hard to vote at this stage. I'm waiting for something to go on properly.

It's day 1. You can't really expect much else. All you'll get is a few groundless 'suspicions' from people based on trivial evidence or flat out guesses, then at the end of it a townie will end up getting lynched and we'll be worse off than when we started.

Maybe our resident expert on this game would like to speak up and tell us where we're going wrong?

You've pretty much knocked it on the head. The only place we're going wrong is by not forcing discussion; if we just lynch someone at random then proceed to day 2 we'll have nothing more to go on than we did today.

Right now, though, there isn't much we can do. What you need to do later is to look at Day 1 in retrospect and figure out why people voted as they did. Were they a bit too eager to lynch that townie early? Did they jump on the bandwagon to lynch scum - or even start that bandwagon - so as to deflect attention from themselves?

The Cop should obviously stay silent until he finds a scum. If he speaks to confirm someone as Town then he will be NKed, followed by the now-confirmed Townie. Trading the Cop for a guaranteed lynch is worth doing, though, so once he does find scum he shouldn't keep it to himself in case he gets NKed before finding a second. In the event of someone counterclaiming in response to the Cop's claim then both the people involved are going to die. One of them is lying and hence is scum, so we lynch from among the two of them. If we lynch the scum the Cop is outed and the scum NK him, if we lynch the Cop we know the other claimant is scum and lynch him the next day.

On the subject of the Cop: it makes logical sense that whoever they are they'll be investigating me tonight, because you really need to know if I'm scum. I've been keeping quiet because it would be very easy for me to use my experience to take charge. If I'm scum, this would be a nightmare for the Town. The scum have a harder choice; they have to decide whether to take me out before I become dangerous, or to leave me alive in the hopes of making you all suspect me. Most probably I'll be the NK target, though, because the Cop is most likely to investigate me and so if there's no claim in the morning I will effectively be confirmed as Town or the Cop. So get talking, so I can post some thoughts on people before Night.

In a plurality lynch game a lynch is guaranteed once there is one vote on a person unless all votes are cancelled. It's why I prefer majority lynch; it provides more information on voting patterns, and if no majority forms there is no lynch. No-lynches aren't good for Town as you have no flip to go on, but if someone gets to -1 and nobody drops the hammer then either they're scum or they're Town and all the scum were already voting for them.

Basically you are afraid that because of your experience both the town or the Mafia will want you dead first (depending on what team you are on), but if you survive the day AND the night then people are going to think you are Mafia and not make it to the second night?
I can understand that fear, I would not know what to do in your position.

A bizarre idea, but if the 9 townies don't vote to lynch, anyone that does is clearly mafia. The flaw in the plan is if nobody votes

Sorry, what I ment was, for example, someone votes me to be lynched and no one really protests then I am probably a townie.

However, there are very simple tactics that could make people think otherwise

but you see one of the townies could get impatient and vote anyway after someone votes and then end up being the target of lynching. This is going to be difficult to get the ball rolling, there needs to be someway of kicking off the first day to give people something to go on and make an educated choice on who to lynch rather than just, you sound the most shifty by your 2 posts, i vote you

Two acronyms you should learn to love: WIFOM and LAMIST.

WIFOM is "Wine In Front Of Me", referring to the scene in The Princess Bride where Vizzini attempts to deduce which cup of wine is poisoned with various layers of obviousness. It's a Mafia tactic where you do something that is so obvious that people wonder if you're being obvious to mislead them. It's usually a Scum tactic, but Town can use it to make the Scum want to keep them alive.

LAMIST is "Look At Me, I'm So Town". Everyone wants to be thought of as Town, and sometimes they try too hard to prove it. That's LAMIST, and it's almost always a Scum tell.

In this case, I'm WIFOMing the scum. It should appear obvious to them that I'm not the Cop, as if I was I wouldn't be reminding them it wouldn't be the worst move to kill me. On the other hand, I could be playing the Br'er Rabbit trick and asking them not to throw me into the briar patch with the intention of being NKed - because if they NK me and I'm not the Cop, I've guaranteed at least one free investigation for the Town with a 30% chance of catching Scum. :D

Thanks for the explaination, and the Princess Bride and Song of the South references!
