Evertons problem will be next year. Lukaku is a double edged sword. If we sign him the money is all gone and we don't actually improve as a squad. If he goes we have to find a replacement and for our money that's a hard task.
yes/no. For one thing Chelsea won't necessarily sell, also there is every chance they'll do a cut price deal so that they get the first option to buy back at a cheap cost. IE sell for 20-25mil now because he currently doesn't want to sign a new contract, but for that price you aren't going to get a lot of benefit back your way. Sell him for 10mil, with first refusal before selling to another club and the option to buy back for say 15-20mil.
It means if he turns into the best striker around in the next 4 years they effectively can get themselves a top notch striker for cheap. Then they can get a Costa/Falcao now, though I keep thinking Costa is old because he has the face of a 35 yr old but he's only 25.
Either way, they already have cash left over from the last summer and whatever else they can get this year. Lukaku will be a year older and long term it's a good deal with potential for significant profit if/when he moves on in a few years so for Everton 20mil upfront with no clauses has more potential for profit than a cut price deal that lets Chelsea effectively get him back on the cheap.
Lukaku himself has a lot of room for improvement. Plenty of poor games this year as you'd expect from a 20 year old player. he started great, went through a poor spell and I think has come back stronger, more well rounded. He seems willing to learn and the being played on the wing against Arsenal showed there was more and more to his game. I think he'll thrive and improve significantly year on year under a good manager for several years. So him alone staying and being a year older, more experienced will improve the team. The team will also improve with another year under that mentality and improving in the league.
There are always good quality cheap players available, with increased money from TV and potentially CL money I think Everton can comfortably spend more than 20mil this year, but it seems like Martinez has already earmarked a significant portion of the money to upgrade training facilities first which is sensible.
Regardless of what Everton spend this summer they won't get CL every year, they might get it now and then, but spending after a goal the club simply can't achieve is how teams get in huge trouble. Martinez has a very sensible head on his shoulders and is making the right moves, I wouldn't worry about this summer.
