I think the beauty of the books is that you're free to side or side against characters as you find them.

There are no out and out villains and no out and out heroes in this, there are just many shades of grey.

Oh absolutely, though the characters are a lot fewer shades of grey in the show, and much closer to B&W.

(except Joffrey)

I feel sorry for show-watchers...no sooner are they rejoicing at having got rid of Joffrey, than Ramsay gets in to full flow:p

You say that, but I still find myself liking Jamie, where I once detested him and wanted him to die at the soonest opportunity after attempting to kill bran.

I actually hated the first season because Joffrey and Eddard seemed like such boring black and white characters. The show still has too many white knights and psychopaths for my taste but I'm glad that other characters with more nuance now have some extra screen time.

I want to see the wish granting wizard/knight/changling again.
I quite like seeing the duo of Arya and the hound (never realised he's the guy from the Scots porridge oats adverts!), the scene where she steals his dagger and he grabs it back from her was pretty funny.

As someone said earlier there are some characters that come across as shades of grey even in the TV series, I disliked the hound at first but he seems to be developing into a more likeable type now.

Oh and I never realised Bronn is played by Jerome Flynn!

Hound is a violent git but who isn't in this universe but he is likeable because he has honour.

Just watched first two episodes back to back.

Epic as usual!

Sidenote: read an interesting article in the Independent other week about how this show really explains and showcases the pursuit and use of power, influence.
Even better than house if cards in this respect.

Valid viewpoint in my opinion.

Its worth reading up a little on his background as its heavily used as a guide to his character in the TV show as it explains a lot about his character, while I wouldn't say hes a nice person in many ways hes a victim of circumstance and the way this changes with Arya where hes given chances to do the things differently than what he did in similiar situations in the past and maybe do the right thing this time is somewhat interesting, while as before I wouldn't say it goes as far as a redemption story there is some aspect of that to it.

That's true, but he would have to be playing a really long game to be behind it all. Tommen is next in line and if the Lannisters don't suspect the Tyrells (they should be) they will probably marry him to Margaery again. Meanwhile Petyr Baelish is kissing up to bit-players out in the middle of nowhere.

Actually if The Lannisters still suspect Tyrion, that might put Sansa at threat for Baelish to swoop in for some shenanigans again. Hmm.

Littlefinger has had a lot of power until recently though. Robert Baratheon was very much a backseat driver of his kingship, letting his court do all the decision making, this gave Littlefinger a lot of power. Once Robert died a young boy who was not old enough to rule became king, although as he got older he became old enough and started to like making all the decisions. There is definitely motive for Littlefinger to have done it, albeit quite weak and petty, however nothing at all to actually suggest that he is behind it.

Tyrell's certainly have motive, The old woman knows Joffrey is an ********. Also weddings are very much a trade and with Joffrey dead Tywin's end of the tyrell deal is left unmet. Tywin of course secured food from Highgarden in return for tying their family to wealth and the throne. Catelyn Tully was originally going to marry Ned's brother but he died so instead Catelyn married Ned. It is highly likely the Tyrells will force Tywin to allow Margery to marry Tommen. THe motive of course is that the Tyrells are still tied to the throne but now their daughter isn't in danger of being crossbowed for making Joffrey a ham sandwich instead of a steak sandwich.

Tyrion's motive is quite weak imo, he simply doesn't like his nephew, however his weak motive is very well know and will probably be the first thought for anyone that knows him (especially after being quite so publicly accused by his sister), but surely Tyrion of all people would not be so stupid as to do it on a such a public stage?

Sansa could be behind it, he made her suffer for a long time, not to mention killing her father. She also seems to have an escape route planned which will probably make every very suspicious of her after the ruckus calms down and everyone realises she's not at the party anymore. Although if it was Sansa I think she would be working with other people.

I can't really think of any known characters that would realistically kill Joffrey, obviously people from the North, but how would they even get into the wedding?

Theres quite a lot of speculation that the guild (faceless men) are the tool used to kill Joffrey which possibly leads back to littlefinger and/or the tyrells none the least they are about the only ones who could afford the price for a hit on Joffrey but theres another angle to that which isn't covered (atleast not yet) in the tv show regarding how intertwined Arya is with the guild and Joffrey is on her kill list (though not sure that direction and a hit on Joffrey would be a direction they would take due to the complexity of it).

EDIT: That also covers most of the main entities who'd have an interest in protecting sansa stark as well as killing Joffrey.

Just watched the first two, they were all over too quickly! Quite enamoured with Prince Oberyn. Needs more man-on-man action since Renley croaked it. :D

In King's Landing, the only real suspects are the Tyrells and Oberyn. Oberyn is angry with Tywin rather than Joffrey, and I don't think poisoning would be his style either so that only leaves the Tyrells as prime suspects!

I haven't looked behind these spoiler tags, but I've RTM'ed them. Everyone should be clear on the rules, so there is no need for the tags whatsoever.

If you are posting plot spoilers from the books, you will get suspended, if you are discussing Tv episodes which have been aired, there is no need for them!
