Is it acceptable to be on your mobile while at a check out in a supermarket.

J...in my local Aldi's
Local Aldi's what?

Jokes aside... who cares? It's Aldi. Lidl and Aldi staff are regularly moody faced and their checkouts are severely understaffed. I only shop there for the Tower Gate Custard Creams and deliciously glazed Krispy Kreme clone donuts (25p each!!!). Same story almost every time. Only 1 checkout manned and the operator has a moody face.

It amazes me when staff are moody in supermarkets, as if serving customers is a chore for them. I mean, what did they expect their job would be when they applied for the role of checkout assistant?

If I remember correctly, Lidl and Aldi actually pay better than most of the big Supermarkets.

I'm sure they do get paid more. Hell I even applied for the store down the road when I was at college and they turned me down! Bit awkward being turned down by Lidl :p Maybe I filled in the application form with too much enthusiasm?

No it's not rude at all sounds like someone was just in a mood unless you were standing there like a melon holding everyone up.

You don't need to give 100% concentration to stand there whilst they scan your stuff nor are required to interact with the robots in these stores.

They are there to scan things and wait and take payment it isn't against their human rights and none of their business if customers need to multitask.

There seems this slight growing trend of these workers thinking they are something special.

I didn't think they actually only have 1 role? These supermarket people?
From what i could get from when my mate worked in Tesco, he was mainly warehouse but at times was required to do dotcom, checkouts and shelves.

The reasons i no longer go to the shops is because online is easier and you get actual happy people!! They were always so moody on the checkouts (also once got accused of stealing whilst...in the shop! Use my motorbike helmet as a basket)

I think in the queue it's fine but if you are at the front you should be packing your bags, getting your wallet out and making conversation with the person on the till. Always atleast say thank you.

why make conversation with a till monkey?
I hate it when they say "hello" and after you answer it's "how are you?"

It's even worse when they start asking about stuff your buying....

Lol. Well it's staffed by women, so I don't think that will be an issue for me. :p

Women touching your hair, gently brushing their fingers over your ears as they press their thighs against the arm rest where your hand lies... I would watch that film.

I know it can sometimes seem forced. But imagine you had that job. I imagine you would appreciate a little conversation. Or atleast some kind of communication.

Exactly!!! I've never been on my phone at the till, but wouldn't, and don't, see an issue with it. As long as you say" hi", and "thanks", there's no rudeness involved at all. The cashier deserves a reprimand for that imo.

The issue with phone use in situations like this is it's openly saying "I don't care about you at all, you are a servant, I am busy with more important things." And while this is what we may secretly think, displaying such disregard for people supplying us with a service breaks the social contract we all enter into in order to form a polite and decent society.

There were always inconsiderate people, but modern life gives us many more opportunities to display our ignorance.

I personally consider it very rude and deal with it in my own special way :)

So supermarket employees are beneath you? Super attitude there!

You'd be in for a nasty surprise if we all didn't show up for work for 24 hours :p

Checkout staff have to interact (at least that was the case when i worked at sainsburys).

As mentioned as long as the person didnt just stop chat and not pack there bags, not pay etc.. i couldnt give a bleep. You always get the person who'll answer the phone and walk to the end of the belt, meaning that the checkout member would normally have to finish packing (used to watch us). Not a lot you could do really other then pack the bags so badly they might think about it next time ;)

What always annoyed me was we had to say.. "hello would you like help packing your bags" and the customer would say yes.. then proceed to watch you. Used to drive me nuts!!! I DONT WANT TO HELP YOU BUT I HAVE TO SAY IT.. PACK YOURSELF! there are exceptions like people with small kids, its more annoying when there are like 3 people and they think its great an watch you.. as you slowly die inside.

I'd say it's rude. It annoys me watching fellow shoppers on their phones while being served at the till. But then generally speaking, courtesy and manners seem to be a thing of the past these days anyway.

When asked how my conversation on the phone was any different to me having a conversation with somebody stood next to me, they couldn't answer.

Probably for the same reason they want to ban the use of mobile phones in cars. Phones are more distracting than passengers.

I think talking on a phone when being served is very rude. If i have to take a call in a shop i make sure im finished before i get served
