Do you understand this art

Those pictures are not my cup of tea but I have invested significantly in a couple of artists in the past. It's pictures we like which have also risen very healthily in value.

I don't think there's anything to "get". If you like it you like it, if you don't then that's fine too. There's no right or wrong with art - it's whatever makes you feel like you like it.

Personally it's not my cup of tea, and I wouldn't spend my money on it, but I can understand why some people get excited about things like this - I never thought much about the Mona Lisa until I saw it in person, and it really is quite remarkable considering when it was painted, but also it becomes cherished and a "classic" as a result.

Yeah, but the difference between the stuff posted in the OP and pictures like the Mona Lisa, is that the Mona Lisa actually looks like something - it's a very accurate picture of a person created in a time long before cameras, painstakingly created by someone over a long period of time. Something which we take for granted these days when we can pull a phone out of our pocket and take a photo in 5 seconds.

What's really sad is that the people with real talent who actually paint accurate portraits seem to get paid a fraction of what some of these blobs of paint that look like they were made in 10 minutes get sold for.

Aside from financial investors/speculators I think a lot of it is driven by greed (owning something unique that nobody else can have in a time of mass manufacturing) and people wanting to appear more cultured/intelligent (especially when it comes to 'getting' the inane abstract stuff) , if they simply liked the look of something it's easy enough to get a cheap copy made.

I agree entirely - but to some people this modern art stuff is quite special, and good for them if they get something out of it. I quite like some abstract art if the colours and so on appeal to me, but I think a lot of it is talking up an artist or a piece of art to help the art traders and so on.

You see something like this:

I find quite cool - I couldn't do it, but whilst I wouldn't spend ££££s on it, it still to me at least, looks cool and is quite fun.

"Art" is dictated by a small group of people, these people are also wealthy and influential. What you and I consider art may not be what they consider art. What people view to be art is constantly changing through out the generations.

It's generally a scam.

I do enjoy looking at another perspective on the world though.

It's not art. It's just some bloke chucking paint at a canvas. No skill involved = not art.

The kind of people who like/buy this infuriate me.

There, I said it.

In fairness a lot of my posts infuriate you. The tolerance level is hardly that high. :D

You are starting to grow on me a little tbf.

But you're right in regards to my tolerance level. Anybody who can call this 'art' is just stupid.

I can just chuck my waste bin in the middle of the room in one of these 'art' galleries and the idiots would love it.

Art is basically just what other people deem to be popular, even if it (in the cases above) is complete and utter tripe.

Picture it like flappy bird; hardly a masterpiece of development in any way, but it got popular, so was worth a lot of money. Most art is the same principal.

Art is an abstract representation that causes a burst of emotions while flappy bird is a popular meme so your comparison is quite poor. It's not about rich people with too much money either (hint: even if those rich people don't understand some pieces of art, they didn't get rich by spending money on trash).

These paintings may not have an emotional effect on you but they do on many other people. Add the fact that the author is dead which means his unique style is lost forever and you get to those prices.

Or it could be talentless pretentious hipsters who like to get together to talk rubbish about the paint someone has just thrown at a canvass because it is 'retro' or 'new age chique' or whatever buzzwords the so called fashionistas are using these days.

Just saying ;)

I'm sorry, was that a bit... wordy... for you?

Well... actually they do. It's just that they've managed to convince other people that it's not trash.

Yeah. "Unique". ;)

Here's a bunch of random pictures by other "artists" that totally don't have the same "unique style":

Edit: lol, I just realised, the second picture is Jesus riding a velociraptor

I take it all back, worth every penny!

Can you think of an example of what you consider to be "true" art?
