Anyone shop at Aldi?

Aldi here is hellish.
The staff are from the wrong side of town and only speak Swahili.
The actual store is dingy and a bit dated.
Its very chaotic inside, like an edible version of Primark.
Best place to buy Continental style meat and sausages by a mile though.

We don't have any of that near us. But then again I'd go to Waitrose if we had one near us, so I'm stuck with Sainsburys which actually isn't too bad, fortunately I'm not forced to go to Tesco or Asda!

I've been to Aldi and Lidl before and they do have a some good stuff there. I buy all my meat from a butcher, and large supply numbers from Makro/Costco (tinned tomatoes, etc...). However Lidl/Aldi do some good non standard products (lots of continental stuff) which seem to be reasonably good quality. I like it cos it's foreign though :p

I pop in now & then to look at the boys toys aisle.
I got myself a nice cycle toolkit 2 weeks ago for £10 which has already saved me money.

Aldi and Lidl are brilliant for some stuff especially if you want to get all the German foods you can't get in the usual places. They just need to do Almdudler now.

Plymouth (roughest part of town) so obviously I had to park my Audi in the middle of two bays to avoid doors slamming into it.

Onion Straza isn't rough you big janner puff. Cool story about the Audi, bet you've got a Yugo in real life.

I remember back in the 90s if any kids ever saw someone with an aldi bag they would shout "ALDI" to them :D with the same tone as you would shout "baldy"

To be fair, Aldi in the 90's was terrible, a bit like Skoda before VW took over. Their food was horrible and tasteless. They had a revamp round about 2000 which improved the place vastly.

I prefer Lidl for most things, they seem to get more interesting 'specials' in, but Aldi sell porridge oats in bigger bags.

Lidl in Spain is great, the beer is phenominally cheap.

I have a Morrisons, an Aldi and a Waitrose all within walking distance of my flat. I tend to avoid Morrisons and Waitrose (however based on Raymond Lin's post, I will certainly be popping down just before closing time, cheers).

I use Aldi for my main weekly shop and sometimes drive into the next town to visit a Tesco, for the veg that Aldi don't stock at ours (it's not the biggest).

Glad you're enjoying Aldi OP, but it's certainly not 20% of the price of Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys et al.

I mostly go to high end independent stores because I refuse to sacrifice quality.

But on the occasions I've been to Aldi and Lidl the quality is absolutely phenomenal, and the prices are way cheaper than the supermarkets. Things like Vegetables are good, some of their chilled meats and cheeses, the pastry reminds me a lot of the stuff you get at a hilton for breakfast and it's always fresh, good all purpose olive oil and all manner of interesting weekly offers.

I won't even go near a Tesco or a J Sainsburys for produce, the quality is crap and it costs twice as much, the tomatoes they get in I wouldn't even feed those to someone I disliked - so flavourless and watery. Don't even get me started on some of the markups on other stuff.

Plus in places like Aldi and Lidl you don't get some ******** service promise - **** off with that nonsense. You bosh it on the belt, the bloke doesn't say a word, scans it through as quick as possible, you pay and you leave.

And no one mills about - they're there to buy, not spend an hour browsing.

Great shops are Aldi and Lidl.

The only downside seems to be that the carpark was full of old scrappers and the place is in Union Street, Plymouth (roughest part of town) so obviously I had to park my Audi in the middle of two bays to avoid doors slamming into it.

Do you want to get keyed? Because that's how you get keyed.

We use to shop at Sainsbury's, I reckon our shop is probably around 30 - 50% cheaper now we buy the vast majority at Aldi. However, we still buy alcohol elsewhere and our meat from the butchers.

there are a few things I like that has no comparison in Lidl and vice-a-versa so I normally have a cycle down to both on a Monday as they are only 400m apart from each other.
Urgh, my missus is the same, only she doesn't have a bike or a driving license and likes Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda as well as Iceland, Aldi and Lidl.
Man I hate living in Nottingham where we have 2 and 3 of each superstore.

Enjoy it while you can because in less than a decade I reckon you're going to really struggle to find anymore independent shops :(
It's happened all across America and the supermarkets here (Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys ..etc) have already started to kill off the independent high street shops

I don't get firstly, why do folk who shop at Aldi or Lidl feel the need to ram it down people's throats? They feel the need to compare and get some sense of superiority from 'it tastes just like 'x' but 50% cheaper!'. Or the good one is 'It almost tastes like 'x'... but is cheaper!'.

Secondly, I believe studies were made earlier in the year/late last-year which found that the primary reason for Aldi/Lidl's being such a bit hit in the UK is because the alcohol is cheap(er) than elsewhere. I believe the study found that it was in fact women who went there for cheap booze.

*NB not necessarily on about people on this thread*

I send the butler to Aldi to get the majority of my shopping while I'm in Waitrose buying meat in a bag. I park the Range Rover on top of the ordinary peoples' cars.
