The 670's replacement was the 770..

Wasn't the 770 mearly a GTX 680 with some sort of core boost thing?
The 760 was the replacement for the 660?

Like they did with the 4 > 5 series
GTX 470 > GTX 570 (Very similar to 480)
GTX 480 > GTX 580 (Fully Enabled Fermi Part)
GTX 660 > GTX 760
GTX 670 > GTX 770 (GTX 680 OC)
GTX 680 > GTX 780
GTX 690 > GTX 780 Ti (Fully Enabled Kepler Part)
..............> GTX Titan
..............> GTX Titan Black (Fully Enabled Kepler Part, Less Gimped For Compute)

Um wut? Do you mean in terms of performance?
GTX 660 > GTX 760
GTX 670 > GTX 770
You only have to look at the naming, price and tier of the cards. 660 was replaced by 760.
The Titan's and 780 Ti all came in at a tier above, the Titan Z is in it's own little world
NOt really. Not from a price point of view anyway. The 660's launch price was $229 and the 760's launch price was $250. Like wise, the 670's launch price was $399 , as was the 770's.
The mould breaker was the 780 as yes it was released at $599 compared with the 680's $499 launch price but I guess Nvidia thought the 780 was so powerful they could milk new buyers for a bit
The Titan and 780 Ti were higher tiers to anything in the 600 series.
Correct, the 760 replaced the 670 in that price/performance tier, the 770 replaced the 680 in that price/performance tier and the 780/Titan were a new tier above any we had previously had. People often confuse this because the goalposts hadn't moved in so long that when a company brought out a new tier above what was the normal "top end" it confused many (a similar thing happened in the motor car industry which resulted in the "hypercar" tier above the "supercar" tier which had been the top tier for so long.
This is a midrange card hence my prediction for the performance.
The top of the range 20nm card that turns up next year will be a lot faster.

If it is marketed as a mid range card it wont be more expensive than a 780. Even Nvidia know they wouldn't get away with releasing something 1 and a half years later that doesn't perform as well, but costs more money.
This time around, I reckon if it is around 780 performance it will be released at about £250 ( perhaps an 870?). Then £350 for the 880 which will be more like the performance of a 780Ti. That leaves them the £450 and £550 price brackets for the GM200's.

Wait and see they did not have any problem selling a card 20% slower than a GTX 690 for the same price lol.
You are not going to get a cheap midrange card if NVidia do not have anything (20nm) to sell above it.
Remember the GTX 680.
It did but not a great deal, in nvidias eyes it took amd over 6months to even match the original titan, even then a 780ti and titan black later and they nudged back ahead...If amd want to give them something to think about they need to be the ones setting the bar
You are right with AMD needing to be quicker with the release but also the reference cooler does need thinking about, had to change mine and didn't think it was going to be soooo bad. With how much throttling I was getting the performance was being wasted.

Well yes
But i suppose all they have done is see the shipping of the GM200 (which is in bigger quantities. ie 10 rather than the single unit for the GM204 core not that that makes any real difference) and concluded that just like the GM204 chip a new card will follow a few months after. Judging what Nvidia did last time a Titan esque Titan II is definitely a possibility.

Nvidia could easily come in with mid end cards faster than the stock gtx780/ti. They would just be clocked silly high and have no headroom. The review's would look good and they could price high as well. The reality would be once you overclocked the gtx780/ti they would be faster once more. Nvidia are great at marketing and i am sure they would sell.
