Reminds me of the 480 vs 580. Similar performance but the 580 ran allot cooler.

For me if you look at the gtx770 overclocked performance. You can get it onto the heals of a gtx780 at stock. Now throw in the new Maxwell architecture then extra shaders along with high clocks you should in theory already be ahead of a stock gtx780.

ill be shocked tho if its good value, that would go against their whole marketing right now, nvidia thinks they are a fashion label :)

Totally different. The 680 was actually a nice step up from a 580 in terms of performance, therefore they could use it as there next gen flagship for a while.

If as you say these "midrange cards" don't outperform a 780 they certainly wont get away with charging more than a 780! Who would buy them?

Who buys a GTX 780 instead of a 290P or a GTX 760 instead of a GTX 670.

NVidia will sell them if they are the only cards they have on the shelves.

Relatively similarly priced and have similar performance. The 780's (judging by OCUK) seem to be on average £30-£40 more than the 290 but some people might find the Nvidia specific features worth that extra.

People who missed out on all the dirt cheap 670's :p. The 760 is a bit more sensibly priced now anyway. You have to remember that the 670 was only the same price as the 760 for a few weeks whilst all the old stock was cleared out. The 760 came out slightly above the 660's launch price and nowhere near the 670's launch price.

they dont have to be any better if they only thing can buy

The point is people buy these options.

Any new NVidia card may come as standard with very fast VRAM compared to a GTX 780 that does not mean that as a whole the new card will be faster but people may want it because of that feature.

NO that is my point.

7950 launch price was $449. The 270 launch price was $199!

My point is, is that if the 880 performs the same as the 780, it will have a much lower launch price when compared with the 780. I think if they release any card now under the 800 series name that is slower than the 780 they will price it at around £250.

What you are not taking into consideration is the names. Gtx880 suggest a top of the line card and most likely will have the price to go with it. When looking at the 7950 and 270x you have one named as a top series card (7950) and then the r9 270x which is mid end. Where you might be right is the gtx880 coming in with a lower release price comparing to the gtx780 as that was around £550 here. Can't remember what it was in dollars.

if it comes in under the LAUNCH price of the 780 that still doesnt make it a good card to me, not if you can snap up something faster now for less

Well, it did, until nvidia went nuts with naming period. ti got stuck on everything so is an 880 high end or is the 800ti? Then there's the titan stuff which is frankly stratospheric in pricing - ultra high end? Perhaps we now have low high end, mid high end and ultra high end?

I agree. However, as Kapp said, if it performed worse than a 780 then I believe it will be around that £250 mark.

I cant see it performing worse and still costing more than a 780.

Don't forget both companies also had SE and LE cards, and they meant different things lol. ATi GTO wasn't the same level (of their own tier) as Nvidia GTO either IIRC.

There's always been stuff tacked on the names, hell I remember a phone conversation where a friend was asking what to buy for his money out of the Radeon 8500LE, 9000PRO, 9200SE, and the GF3 ti300, GF4 MX460 lmao.

not really, we just had this convo in the other thread - an 8800GTX from 10 years ago was £500 on release - adjusted for inflation that is equivalent to £800 in todays money, which is what a Titan was on launch

top top end cards have always been bonkers prices for the extra few FPS they actually delivered
