The CPU and boards have great prices but the ram is horrific, so thats stopped me! £300 for 32gb! wahhhh, hell no, I got 32gb Patriot 2-3 years ago new for like £140 ish.
Yeh, same here. I'm itching to get a new system but the price of the ram is stalling me. Guess I can wait a while for prices to settle.

Is 32gb really going to be needed for the next couple of years, I'm thinking of doing 16gb for the next 12 months then upgrade.

Not really. I struggle to fill 16gb as it is
But you'd rather get the 8gb DIMMs I think, unless you change your hardware constantly, and at quad channel that's 32gb..

I am only going 32 due to I edit video for a living so use it easily, ideally id want 64gb but not for those INSANE prices.
I run a lot of Virtual machines, do a fair amount of rendering work so I've been running 64GB on my current workstation
I'd be looking for 32GB as a bare minimum. I presume ordering 2 kits of 32GB still isn't an ideal solution

Possibly the only solution at this point. 16gb DDR4 dimms are a long way off I think

32GB of DDR3 RAM is also around £300, £140 times are long gone.
You are aware that memory production lines have halfed since former times due to those production lines now being used for NAND, due to massive increase in volumes of smart phones and tablets.
DDR3 prices have pretty much tripled since a year ago and DDR4 certainly won't be cheaper than DDR3 for a long time.

Im definitely buying a new CPU/mobo/ram this weekend, dont know if I should be brave and buy the 5930k/x99 or play it safe and go for a 4790k/x79..........
Play it safe and buy my 2600k @ 4.6 off me instead

That's not even a dilema. I would have thought it was a given
5820K + 16GB DDR4 + X99.
It's a million times better than Z97 + 4790K and not even that much more expensive !
