Only thing may be to create a USB installer, boot > format > install
That's what I normally do funnily enough, just thought this time I'll go through the app store

Reboot ?
Didn't want to stop this optimisation thing. Working now but installing these updates is ridiculously slow! I think iTunes took over 1 hour to install
I tried to enable TRIM on my MBP, it asked me to reboot, but i think it has killed the HDD !
All I got is this

Anyone got a clue?

For those who are stuck on the grey boot screen, here’s how you get back into OS X:
Boot recovery mode by holding Cmd+R during boot
Open the Terminal from the menu bar
Run these commands, replacing YourDisk with the name of your Mac disk (partition)
nvram boot-args=kext-dev-mode=1
cd /Volumes/YourDisk
touch System/Library/Extensions
kextcache -prelinked-kernel System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/kernelcache -K System/Library/Kernels/kernel System/Library/Extensions
Wait until it finishes (can take several minutes) and reboot.
If you still can’t boot, redo the procedure again (but you can skip the nvram command)

fresh install or upgrade?
my current osx is 10.9.5

How do I find out the name of my mac disk petition?
Am I missing out on something? I've must have downloaded Yosemite like 3 times now from App Store. It's around 5GB right? It says 'Downloaded' but it doesn't give me an option to install? If I reboot my Mac Mini, it only lets me redownload it again?

Will I actually achieve anything with a fresh install? Looking at it now, I think my current build (10.10) is actually just a straight upgrade path from 10.4. Don't think I've ever done a clean install, even after changing hardware.
When you're in the Terminal, just 'cd' to /Volumes and then do an ls. That'll list the volumes.
menus really do look awful on a normal monitor
