** Star Wars Episode VII - SPOILERS WITHIN **

I wouldn't mind the lightsabre if the hilt blades came out in the right place, but at the moment a sliding opponent's lightsabre would just slice off their emitters. It doesn't make sense. So at that point I was like doh!

Then John William's turned up in the Millenium Falcon and pow.. so many feels.

Wow at the complaints. I thought it looked good, I mean it is less than two minutes so it's hardly showing much. But well Falcon and X-Wing - **** yeah I'm on the hype bandwagon.

yeah thats what i was thinking but hey, can't be any worse than the prequels!

It's very JJ Abrams, which was obviously going to happen, I just wished it wouldn't look so much like Star Trek with the spinning, twisty camera work. Other parts looked fantastic, I'm mostly interested in where they take the story.

As for the lightsaber, the jury's still out for me. When I first glimpsed it in the trailer I didn't like it, but then I thought about how it might change the combat. Personally I didn't like the combat in the prequels, it felt too wishy-washy for me, swinging pretty coloured sticks around without much struggle or power. I thought having a hilt guard might change up the fighting to resemble more traditional medieval sword fighting. However looking at the picture again, it's got little black metal bands at the hilt, so it kind of nullifies it's use in saber combat (I sound like such a nerd :p) So I'm really not seeing how it's practical. I'm hoping that character is more of a newbie/wannabe sith who built the thing himself because if you look at the light blade itself, it's not entirely normal, it's all rough and fiery as if it's unstable.

I'm hoping at least. Still looking forward to it so much!

I never said the hilt had anything to do with weight.. Im just saying that I read somewhere that lucas wanted the sabers to be more like actual swords that hit heavy which would maybe explain the reason why it has a hilt because they want them to appear more like actual swords....
When you think about the original saber design it would be so simple to cut the other persons fingers off in an instant lol.

Not really, lightsabers have always been shown to be very high friction, I can't recall many times that I've seen blades sliding against each other. They mostly seem to clash and stick.

And to be honest who gives a **** what Lucas wanted. Star Wars is a lot bigger than him now and frankly it's been a lot better when he hasn't been involved. What would you rather see? The 'epic' duel between Obi Wan and Vader in Episode 4 or any other lightsaber battle ever. I know what I'd choose. It makes no sense that lightsabers would be heavy.

X-Wings!!1!

Woo! :D

While I've never considered Abrams' Trek to be all 'official like', it was still entertaining. Regardless of how this goes, we all know it will be better than the prequels.

The red lightsabre might have looked a bit silly, but I liked it. :o

I'm 95% sure that there were purple lightsabers in the universe before the prequels.

Yeah non canon video games :)

From wookie:

As said, purple lightsabers originated with Samuel L. Jackson. As said ,in the star wars universe itself, Mace windu's crystal wasn't found in the caves of Ilum but on another planet

Purple lightsabers did exist in the canon before Mace Windu. In October 1997 the character Boc Aseca wielded twin purple lightsabers in the video game Jedi Knight, and in January 1998 Mara Jade uses a purple lightsaber in the game expansion Mysteries of the Sith. This is all before Episode I was released in 1999 and before Mace debuted his purple lightsaber in Episode II in 2002

Any other battle.

There's nothing epic about the New Hope battle. It's terrible. They are masters of the force not masters of the retirement home. It was epic when I was 8 and this was all new.

Exactly :p Canon was always a bit of a fuzzy term anyway when it came to Star Wars.

I don't see why lightsabers should only be green, red and blue. It doesn't impact on the universe at all having other colours.
