Asus G751JY ROG Gaming laptop IPS display

Guys can you please all do me a favour and check how bad your "IPS glow" is when on dark scenes? I mean checkit objectively without any "rose titned specs" that you have when you get a new laptop, as I didnt notice mine for a day or two. The screen is spectacular, but the overall glow is quite strong and very noticeable on dark scenes... not sureif its normal or not?

Either way the laptop is a complete beast, chews up everything I throw at it including Skyrim modded to the max!
 
All IPS screens suffer from glow it's part of the technology and there is not really much you can do about it.

I find having the better viewing angles and vibrant colours outweighs the cost of some glow.

I know all suffer "to some extent", but mine highly distracting in games with dark scenes.

Just had a look at mine and it's not overly bad about what I would expect for an IPS type screen. I cannot say it's overly distracting in dark areas tbh it's hardly noticeable unless I look at it at angles.

You might have a bad screen ? Can you take some pics looking at a black screen in the dark ?

Richdog - thanks for the pointers, I'll be sure to check them out.

Loaded up most of my games over the weekend and took a peek at how each of them looked & played. Luckily the Steam sale was on so I also picked up Alien:Isolation, the three Batman:Arkham titles, Flashpoint: Campaigns Red Storm and ARMA III.

I can't believe how great these games look and how smooth they play. The biggest surprise was my heavily modded version of Skyrim. I have 355 hours of gameplay on it and it was as if I was playing a new game.

I did run out of room on my SSD drives - never having an SSD drive machine before I loaded the games onto the SSD, except one that I couldn't fit. I put two of them that were not graphic heavy onto the drive that has the OS, and then the others (including Shadow of Mordor and the aforementioned ARMA III, Alien:Isolation, Batman x 3 and Skyrim) onto the other drive.

Is this the right way to do it? Will I run into problems having very little space (7GB and 13GB respectively) on my SSD's?

Ok will try and do this tonight, didnt get time over the weekend due to excessive Skyrim consumption. :o

That does seem very low space, and I read SSD performance often suffers. What SSD's did the machine come with, or did you buy them yourself?
 
I got mine today and so far very pleased with it. I thought the MSI was good but this is virtually silent in Windows and it does not run hot at all. Haven't tried it in anger yet, just getting used to the different keyboard layout and how it runs.

For some reason Asus partition the SSD in a rather bizarre way. You get a small C: partition and a larger D: partition but it isn't a great deal of use when software is so large these days. Then you get the 7200 split two ways. It's not very productive. First thing I did was delete the 7200, and repartition it to one drive. Then I backed up the entire C: drive so that I have a initial recovery backup.

Now adding hundreds of megs of updates and such like. Haven't even got into the bios yet. Anything I need to know update wise?

Read the ASUS ROG forums to check for latest issues. ALso:

1) Check if you have the subwoofer sound driver bug
2) Check if two left USB 3 ports work at full speed using an external drive and large file transfers (WD seems the main brand affected)
3) Check your IPS screen on darkimages and games with the lights off to see how the IPS glow is
4) Be sure to "Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings" in the QoS section on your router settings (mine is Netgear 6300, maybe yours is in a different place) to get full wireless speeds

As a point of interest for some people, I easily managed to overclock my refresh rate to 75hz by setting a custom resolution in Nvidia control panel. Will see how far it can comfortably go later in the week, but it's definitely led to a perceived increase in smoothness. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those 120hz whores, but I think it certainly doesn't hurt to give the 980m some legroom and increase gaming smoothness where possible, especially when it's as easy as a few clicks! :)
 
I'm very pleased with this so far. Out of the box it has been a much smoother experience for me than the MSI was. But I'm taking a while adapting to the keyboard layout and I do miss the different colour LED, small things though. The difference between the two is quite remarkable, it just shows the difference 12 months can make in technology.

I am still running with the original bios and I think I have the sound driver bug, but I'm sure that will be addressed.

Update to BIOS 205, it fixed temp monitoring and accuracy. You need to do it via the BIOS interface with the download 205 BIOS on a USB stick, but it's very simple and worth doing.

Yeah, I'm sure the sound drivers will be fixed, annoying but not a huge deal as I have headphones and a soundbar which I use 99% of the time.

All I need to do is add an SSD and I'll be golden. Amazing value at the £1250 I paid for it. :D
 
Hello everyone!
First post here so don't judge me wrong if i missed the thread. I have ordered my G750JY last Friday and by some problems with the delivery i have got it today. I opened it 30 min ago and I have a big problem with the screen - i doesn't turn on, after power button it shows only black screen with some green thin stripes. Also when i opened the box I noticed a small gap between the screen and the plastic that covers it. Does anyone got the same or problem or other unpleased situation with G751? I was expecting other minor issues but not this. I couldn't call anyone because is too late but i wonder if it's possible to go by myself to Overclockers shop tomorrow and ask for a replacement.

Well, I overclocked the screen to 100hz and it works a treat... so yeah, I now have a 100hz IPS screen. Pretty awesome when you think about it. :D

May try 120hz but I don't want to push my luck... :p
 
My review model had to go back today. :(

I was so immpressed by it that I have today ordered a Asus G751JY-T7009H from OCUK arriving tomorrow.

Two things have impressed me a lot with mine. The IPS screen is simply stunning. Comparing it to what I had before it's like chalk and cheese. I was quite surprised, not that there was anything wrong with the MSI but the contrast between the two is quite remarkable.

Secondly, it's virtually silent even under load, and this has impressed me as much if not more than the screen. Considering how much fire power it has under the hood, it is a feat of engineering.

But I do have issues. At the moment I can't get my Synology Assistant to work properly for whatever reason, and the sound quality is god awful compared to the Sound Blaster in the MSI. But that may be a driver issue I'm not too sure. I could also be really fussy and complain about the Bluray player supplied without any Bluray software. But that is serious nit-picking. I'm pretty impressed overall.
 
Just received mine from OCUK sent in nothing but it's original box with the invoice taped to the outside. The box looks like it has been through hell and back and the Asus seal was broken and replaced with some OCUK tape on the opposite side. Not happy.... :mad:

Had a very quick try of the laptop and all seems ok. It has the sound issue with all the sounds coming from the subwoofer which my review model did not do...

Will have a better play later.
