I find this extremely insulting to be honest. You come in a thread about muslims killing cartoonist to try and justify and rationalize their behaviour? You should be ashamed of yourself.

I find your attitude quite insulting too - but that doesn't mean I resort to personal insults.

I haven't seen anyone in this thread defend the actions on these terrorists. Just rational debating on why obliterating 1/4 of the world's population is not the way to solve the world's problems - especially when pretty much all bar a minority are peaceful and good people.

Furthermore, thinking that humans wouldn't kill each other without religion is beyond laughable.

We're immature as beings/creatures, and still try to conquer and be more powerful than the rest - that's all it is, power, and influence - and pure megalomania, nothing more. Just because someone associates themselves with a religion, faction, ideology does not mean that it is in that name that these things are done.

The media present Charlie Hebdo as simply a "satirical magazine". But it is not the French equivalent of Private Eye as some commentators have suggested. It may have been once, but it has become a specialist in presenting provocative and racist attacks on Islam. That does not justify the killings, but it is essential background.

Nor should we forget that year after year imperialism has launched wars, assassinations, drone attacks and torture across the Middle East and elsewhere. Such outrages create deep hatred.

We should not be fooled into backing a war against Muslims masquerading as a fight for free speech.

Let's unite against racism and Islamophobia.

One of my friends doesn't live far from where it happened, the whole of Paris and the neighbourhood (and undoubtedly the whole of France - having spoken to some of my family about this) are rather shaken up by this.

I just hope that we don't retaliate the way they want us to - i.e. all out war and right wingism. This will be a dark time if we head down that route.

You kill people that have friends and families not associated in the same "group" you alienate those people, and so on... cause/effect.

This is not the way to deal with it.

The silent majority is where we need the strength and the confrontation - away from silence and into full on visible action against this sort of thing.

I don't think that it would. It'd just give more people reason to take up arms, surely(regarding people killed in the crossfire)? And then I suppose we'd just kill them off too?

It's a lot of effort and I'm not sure that it would achieve what you think it would achieve. And that's ignoring how terrible an act it would be in it's own right.

If last night François Hollande could go on TV with the terrorists in jail or in a body bag, then the chances of retaliations would be lower.

But with them getting away yesterday morning, I'd say this is playing right into the hands of Marine Le Pen.

Fighting over petty squabbles is a bit different to forming large militant groups and carrying our various retaliatory attacks all over the place.
