*** The Official Samsung Galaxy S6/Edge Thread ***

You work in the press??

I have contacts amongst Samsung's media partners (for my website which is unrelated to phones). And was invited to the Samsung Unpacked event. It was fantastic and a great excuse to visit Barcelona. ;)

Battery does seem a bit of a concern, especially as they spent lots of time talking about how quickly you can charge it and not how long it may last, but the quick charge is definitely a nice thing. Anyway I'm sure we'll find out when people have had a chance to test it.

That chrome version does look nice. Now I can't decide if I want black or that.

My Z3 is black and indeed it can be a finger print magnet either side so it's not something I'm bothered about because a quick wipe sorts it.

So I was still in the ballpark then? I said I predict £650, and it appears it will be between £550 and £710 for the non Edge depending on storage flavour!

The edge version has a £100 premium over the standard S6. So that makes the 64GB S6 edge around £750

When someone asks how much as S6 is going to cost, they usually mean base price.

And we always meant base price, you were adomant it would retail for more than the Note 4.

The Note 4 isn't a big step up from the Note 3 compared what the S6 will be over the S5. Likewise the S5 wasn't a big step up from the S4. For all intents and purposes the S6 looks set to be a better phone than the Note 4 in almost all areas and should be priced as such.

Will be 550 for the Base model.

I'm still maintaining it will be closer to £650 rather than £575 :p

Yeah that's the thing. the hardest decision will be parting with that kind of cash. Can I be absolutely certain that 128GB on a 14nm 64Bit SoC will last long enough to make that kind of sense for the money? You can buy almost 2x flagships of current gen with that money but since I like to upgrade every year, will that mean i'd be happy with the S6 Edge 128GB for 2 years running?

I can't answer that yet as I need to read more about it.

Galaxy S6 4K camera test.

Galaxy S6 looked very stunning, think I will get one because it slimmer than S6 Edge. Not concerned about no MicroSD slot and non removable battery. 10 min fast charging for 4 hours usage and much improved camera with OIS got me sold. :)

Might just be me, but I really don't like that big button in there. Maybe i'm too used to my galaxy nexus, but just don't see the point in a hard button anymore. Main reason the HTC is still more appealing.

If the build quality is as good as it looks, the software leaner than previous iterations of TouchWiz and general performance is smooth, I may be tempted away from the Nexus/stock Android crowd.

These are my may concerns:
  • Will the Exynos 7 have certain features that Qualcomm has? Do QC SoCs have a independent core just for voice to support "Okay Google" whilst screen is off?
  • The Edge did look interesting, but thinking about it, you'll be stuck with Samsung's launcher to use edge software features. For example, I'll want to install Google Launcher for Google Now voice support but I'll lose the features MKHD talks about in the hands on.
  • Lollipop - My Nexus 5 is pretty much unusable now because of how bad Lollipop is and my friend's S5 has also become as unresponsive since Samsung's update. If Google take x months to release a fixed version of Lollipop, we'll be waiting x + 6 months for Samsung to release an update based on the fixed base.
  • Why do Samsung insist on putting the back button on the right hand side of the phone?! I can put up with a hardware home button if the biometric performance is as good as TouchID.

I honestly feel like Android is all about compromise as of late. If you want stock Android and quick updates, you're forced to go Nexus and put up with the hardware shortfalls (which can be excused due to the price). There's the Moto X that comes close but doesn't have decent battery life or camera ability. You could also claim the OPO gets you close to stock Android and decent hardware but it's massive. Arghhhh!

Will have to have a look at this phone in person if I decided to replace my Note 4 with one, at the moment I'm undecided.

It's funny though how people complained about the Samsung phones being plastic and now they aren't, there are just complaints about battery life or lack of storage lol.

Well I'm sold on the S6 edge, and now the wait. I quite like the Platinum Gold colour, but will wait and see closer to the time.

These are the only colours for the Edge on the Samsung UK site:
