How does fuel work? Do you need a fuel scoop or do you just carry enough with you for an extended trip?
You buy fuel at stations and outposts.
You use a certain amount of fuel just bimbling around, more in SuperCruise and larger chunks all at once every time you jump to another system.
You have a small primary tank and a large reserve tank, with the latter feeding the former.

Fuel scoops auto-deploy when you get close enough (while in SuperCruise) to a star that can be harvested. The idea is to skim the surface, scooping up gas that will burn as fuel. Your ship will heat up the faster you go, but the faster you go the quicker you'll fill up. It's a bit of a balancing act.
The ideal is to get to a point where you're filling up quick, but can roll off the throttle and avoid gaining too much heat.

Am I right in thinking that gimballed weapons are easier to use?
They can be...
Fixed weapons shoot wherever the target reticle(s) is/are pointing.
Turrets auto-track the selected target, even if they move out of your line of sight (for those not using Rift/TrackIR/similar). Turrets have three different fire modes (see right UI panel under Functions) and often auto-fire when a target is selected, which I find a PITA.

Gimbals have *partial* tracking, kinda like a soft target lock, so you may still need to move the ship a bit, to bring the reticles onto the target and even then they will sometimes lose their 'lock'. Got to really keep a watchful eye to make sure they don't slip and accidentally hit a Police ship!
However, while they only fire when you pull the trigger, they mostly just track within line of sight and do less damage than fixed.

I generally prefer flying with gimbals.

So I did god knows how many jumps and nearly run out of fuel on one occasion reaching alpha centauri. How many missions on average/how long to get a Sol permit? Want to go visit Voyager :)

Many thanks, I'm 30K ly out from Sol at the moment and looking forward to seeing how this trip pays out once I get home!

I'm in an Anaconda configured for long range jumps (35 ly) though, so not quite as hardcore as you initially may have thought :p

Ahh! thought it was a python, Still pretty hardcore though especially if you get an unlucky jump into a binary. Those buy back cost are going to smart some what! :D

Good luck out there

Anyone else find it really annoying that shooting at a Wanted ship before scanning him gives you a bounty? The number of bounty hunts I've had to cut short to go pay a measly 300cr fine because I opened up on a ship that already had half a dozen security ships firing at it without scanning first.

I am currently at lord rank in the empire, and the suspense is killing me. It's taken about 4 days of grinding away (I got the major and therefore all minor factions to allied within the first day by bounty hunting in a RES), and just hoping like hell to see thosde naval rank missions. I got two today after a good 6hrs of gameplay, so they don't come very regularly. Please please please give me the last one I need to get that clipper tomorror!

Been having a blast in my sidewinder hunting pirates and collecting bounties, upgraded her to dual gimballed cannons which I'm loving, so quick to just tear through hulls. Not so good on anything more than a Cobra though as I found out trying to face off against an Anaconda that interdicted me, ran out of bullets at 54% hull left and only managed to escape by the skin of my teeth...

Got about 150k credits now, should I buy an Eagle or save up for something else? Not really fussed on trading/mining/exploring at the minute if that helps.

Also how do I rank up Federation? Every mission I do seems to be based off a local faction.

I really needed cheering up the other day so I bought this as a treat to myself. Glad I did cave in as I'm loving it so far!

I am pretty terrible at the combat though, I was doing so little damage to a pirate that his shields kept coming back on and it was taking so long I had to leave the fight as I was running out of fuel! :p And for some bizarre reason I seem to really, really like accidentally hitting the boost button when I'm inside space stations with disastrous results... Three times I've done that now :o I really need to re-map that Joystick button before I try again. :p

I would get either a cobra or a viper. Eagle is a lot like the sidewinder in that the hull is paper thin.

Yeah same here. Keep having to fly off as quickly as possible to clear my 300 credit bounty.... Seems a bit harsh really. LOL

It would be good if you could get a final warning fist.

You need to become friendly/allied with the Federation local factions to progress through the ranks, this guide is pretty helpful:

We've all been there, and yes it rarely ends well! :p

Yeah, I think your right, that would make sense to wait, but I'm not sure when consumer release is. Any ideas.:)

indications are now it wont be until 2016. I do not know if i would wait to be honest. Vive is coming out towards the end of the year, I am not sure at all how it will handle seated experiences like this but the potential is amazing. Imagine standing in a space station and being able to walk around!

I often think ill sell my DK2 and concentrate on 2d games again because i have so many to get through, but then i have a go on DCS or Elite and change my mind. The unit should be seeing more action on ebay towards the summer so if you want to pick up a relatively cheap one id wait until then - although if money is not *too* much of an object and youre fully aware of the shortcomings, id get one now. Youll get at least 9 months out of it, and if they price the Vive closer to the £600 region, probably more.
