Some good news, but as above there is still some more recovery to come by the looks, welcoming news though
 
I think the fact that all of his organs, and hopefully that means heart and lungs, are working without assistance means it unlikely they will pull the plug just yet. However as you say, bleak...

If they pull the plug, what would happen? If his organs are working without issue, would he just remain in a coma? Is there no way to wake someone from a coma?
 
Technically I guess they can't 'pull the plug' as he is breathing unaided. I guess they could stop whatever else they are maintaining him with to stay alive. He is in a coma because of the head trauma not an induced one...

Which country is he in? The laws vary. Here and in the US you can withdraw life-support and let them starve to death/die of thirst but you can't administer any kind of drug to hasten the process. Some more civilised countries allow a lethal injection at that point.
 
He's in France. I think most of the EU countries will require a lengthy and complicated legal battle before allowing the removal of the feeding tube.

My OH's uncle was in a coma for 5 yrs before he passed away. He also suffered a massive head injury. The problem the medical staff will have is not with the head injury as such but with secondary infections and complications from being bed bound.

Food and water can be withheld with only a water based agent applied to stop the lips cracking. Not nice to watch but there may reach a point where it is a better option then an endless cycle of fighting off sores, infections and the effects of body degradation.
 
If i was in that situation I'd want to be kept alive forever. You just never know when you might wake up. You always hear of the odd cases where someone wakes up from a coma after 20 years or something. I reckon that would be pretty crazy, go into a coma as a 20/30 year old, then wake up as a 60 year old.

Would you still ultimately die of old age or could you live forever?

If his higher brain functions are permanently lost, he is already dead. It's only a matter of how his former body is allowed to stop breathing.

Hopefully that is not the case; but if it is then it's better to deal with it quickly than simply withdraw nourishment and allow it to wind down.

Would you really want your family to suffer for 20 years though? I don't think I would want to be kept on a machine for that long.

Wow - at that point surely being put to sleep is a better option. I accept that there is almost certainly no suffering for the patient, but think of the people that love the patient.

If someone is going to die (as they certainly will without food/water) then man up and do it with dignity.

The law disagrees. Euthanasia is illegal in most places while withholding life sustaining care isnt.

Uncomfortable as the alternative is, what your talking about is killing someone, not letting them die with dignity.

Dignity, absolutely no dignity on that death. Dignity and humane is killing them. Euthanasia should absolutely be legal.

Can't believe you used dignity.
