black toe nails improve your power, or so I've heard.

Is that your secret?

think I may have more hair on my legs than I do on my head

Same! I blame the stress of coming here.

One of the jobs in work today.

Top one is the customer himself and the bottom is the boss.

Haha that's brilliant - customer more helpful than the boss! We've all been there

I once took a Tektro R540 brake apart. These things are all the same design. I had a similar experience to you - it kept sticking. I ended up putting oil in the pivots and just not doing it nearly as tight as I could, and it's worked fine since.

That's exactly what I've done with mine, it's not working fine but at least it's working more than it was!

Talking of dual pivot brakes... you should be able to grab ghe whole brake caliper and twist it where it meets the frame right? I mean, it shouldn't be locked solid in one position?

You'd need to loosen the bolt holding it to the frame but it should 'twist' (swing from side to side). It's quite possible (especially if it's not new) that the bolt will have been tight enough to jam it to the frame - or more likely it's stuck to the paintwork, you may find some paint comes from the frame if you twist it too hard.

Good ride today but ended in total disaster for me.

I was about 5 - 10 m behind the group when going through Earlstown when all that rubbish got blown over the road. A black bin bag snagged in my rear derailleur ripping it straight off and locking the rear wheel. Before I had chance to shout they had all rounded the corner. Fortunately the hanger is perfectly intact, but the mech is totalled! One of the jockey wheels is shredded and the jockey wheel housing is snapped in numerous places.

Pretty nasty to see but as mentioned - really glad the damage is isolated to the derailleur and that the hanger, wheels and you are ok! Could've been much worse! Can I be cheeky and ask if you could take the working jockey wheel off and send it me? If you have no other use for it that is!? I'll cover postage and some beer money for ya! :)

Do I wear my hot pink jersey or tone it down with a black one?:D

The daily dilemma of the fashion conscious cyclist. :p

Off work again today but the weather is pretty crappy. There's supposed to be a gap in the rain from 12-4 so I've got a potential flat metric century route I was planning to try and get in but I'm a bit concerned about how much my quads have been aching. My mileage hasn't been crazy in the last week but my quads have been hurting about as badly as they ever have from cycling. Even after only a very short ride on Sat and no riding at all on Sun they feel a bit weak and achy. Pretty concerned that I've messed my saddle set up a bit and given myself a minor injury. Currently weighing up cutting down on my cycling until I can get a proper bike fit on the new bike but on the other hand I have a double imperial group ride this coming Sat and the ride to the South coast in June so I can't completely drop things. Gah :/

Now I find myself looking for workstands, for giggles I checked my Wiggle discount area and I'm at £936.80 for the last year already (to be fair, £664 of that was the bike but still, not really sure what I spent the remaining £270 on!)

During the last 365 days you have spent: £2,351.90
:eek::rolleyes::o

I've not bought a bike from them, my biggest purchase was my £230 Garmin 810... 75% of mine must be clothing...!

I've just picked myself up a Park Tools "Home Mechanic" workstand (PCS9) from Halfords. About £75, which is decent considering the prices of others out there. Seems good and sturdy.

Best price I've seen on the PCS9 - £68.

I got the Jobsworth from PX when it was on a sale for £35. Not sure how frequently it is but it's a great stand!

This Riva Sport one also from PX looks good and is £35. I think it's similar to the Aldi one and I think grudas or someone has it? Or one similar?

Got a shout on the way back from someone saying my rear wheel was rolling quite far to the right, so said I'd pull over and take a look, couldn't see anything and it is rolling relatively straight. Anyone had this before? Going to give the wheel and drop outs etc a good clean out.

Maybe slightly dished? Tyre pressure being on the low side with a bit of dishing and cornering would make it look much worse than it is?

I went out and did 32 miles yesterday after my repairs, did a fairly circular loop around Hereford so I wasn't far from home if I had any problems (rebuilt rear caliper & my achilles was sore all week). Great ride as the roads were quiet, it wasn't too hot or sunny so I really enjoyed pacing myself. My HR is getting much lower on these kinds of rides and my climbing is much improved! Fairly impressed with myself ;)

Wet ride in this morning, forgot to start my Garmin when I left home too! Legs are feeling ok... Ok enough for me to want to go out later with my friend again! He's up for doing another 30 miles (I dare say at 17/18mph like last time!) which I don't think I have in me, I'm expecting to do 10-15 with him with around 5-10 myself on the way back.

Bumped into my neighbour when I got back yesterday, we've talked before about going out for a ride but back then (last autumn) 30 miles was beyond me! We've added each other on Strava so it won't be long until we go out. Looking at his ride from yesterday - he's another fast rider I'll struggle to keep up with! If I keep riding with these faster guys my averages should creep up further, but it's going to be hard work for a while!:p:o

Quick one, Finish Line lubes, I just got the Dry/Red and it's like water?! Did less than 10 miles on it yesterday and I could hear more chain noise??? The Dry/Green is much thicker, like glue consistency and lasts a week before getting more chain noise? I've got some Muc-off Dry lube too, it's thicker, white but equally only lasts 15/20 miles before chain is noisy again. Are dry lubes all that short lived?

red is indeed thinner than green, hence the reason it's "dry" lube, lower consistency and less prone to holding dirt! :) I use green all year round and it does the job tbh!

on a different note, need some good/cheap degreaser for components, what do you guys recommend?

Don't think I can face just setting up the turbo so I might brave the rain. Can't say I'm looking forward to this ride :p

The wetness does give me an excuse to make it into a more relaxed pace ride though, so there's that.

@Roady, the red lube is indeed like that. If there's even a spot of rain you'll need to re-lube. In perfectly dry conditions I'd re-lube once per week (though that would be whilst doing 200-300 miles per week).

@grudas. I have this stuff. It's great stuff though I'm sure it was a lot cheaper when I bought it.

Off work again today but the weather is pretty crappy.

Weather is arse at the moment, and looks like staying that way for a couple of weeks. I'm riding Liverpool to Sheffield tomorrow - 86 miles and my longest ride since July 2013 when I did an imperial century - and it looks like it's going to be "heavy showers" all the way. Joy. I'm gonna pick up an ass saver later today, as I'm buggered if I'm riding all that way with a wet bum.

No guards? Ouch

I've got my double imperial on Saturday and at the moment the forecast says it should be okay. I really hope that turns out to be the case.

I'd rather ride my guardless Planet X for that sort of distance than my TDF with guards. The Planet X is better geared and a bit lighter and the bars are way comfier.

If it was "heavy rain" I'd take the TDF, as I'd rather not have soaking wet feet, but for "heavy showers" it shouldn't be too bad.

Of the two I'd want to ride the PX too but I'd probably try and find a way to bodge some guards on to it :)

cleaned and relubed my drivetrain yesterday, torrential rain this morning. Boom.

I've lost count of the amount of times this has happened to me too :p

I think I'll need to reapply the Red every few days, it didn't 'feel' like it lasted more than 15 miles in perfectly dry conditions! The Green 'feels' good for 100+!:(

The Juice Lubes is great, but for what it costs for 1L I went elsewhere, waiting for 10L of this to arrive... 10L of it I'll be fairly liberal with what I clean as all of the other bikes got neglected when I only had 1L! ;)

Overshoes!

I love my Raceblade XL's, so good and really easy/quick to remove! Got back from my ride yesterday, applied Green lube, fitted guards and wiped chain <10min and things were ready for the commute today! :)

Edit: Wheels arrived from Wiggle! And Ebay Nipples! And bundle of tools/brake cables/cable ends/tyres from CRC. My home cycling workshop is now about complete! ;)

I joke but seriously the amount I've spent, time I've invested and amount of kit I've got I could start my own repair shop! Even though I'm struggling to repair my own (not totally eliminated clicks!) ;) Worst workshop in the world! :p

Went to order my replacement 105 5800 rear caliper and noticed it looks slightly different.

Quick check on the Giant site and they are listed as Tektro TK-R540's. Fairly sure mine are branded 105, not Tektro?!

More than happy to replace 1/both with the 105's but with the 'drop' listed as 49mm is that standard? My Defy 1 2015 has bad/low clearance already, so want to be sure they'll fit and not make things worse...!

49mm is standard drop, yeah. My Tektro R540s are long enough to go round mudguards on the knobbly 28mm tyres that I occasionally use on my TDF so you should be fine.

Anybody store their bikes on a wall stand in the house?

Shed is too unsafe, I cant anchor into the ground and I have a large wall in my office upstairs which I could hang the bike on. Any recommendations for this?

Would like something that doesn't look crap as the wife is already against the idea! :o

need to spend as little as possible or even some kind of nice DIY job would be preferable.
