US: Supergirl (Arrow/Flash team)

Just watched it....
Positives, Chyler Leigh (the older sister) :)
Negatives... very 'girl orientated'
the 'gay' straight IT guy she reveals her secret to, seriously if they didn't imply he was straight I'd have just assumed he was her gay best friend....
calista flockharts forehead just doesn't move AT ALL
David Harewood.. I just don't think he's a good actor, he doesn't seem to change 'character' in any role.

Stupid/Funny elements....
the plane bit, pretty sure it wouldn't have worked the wing would have likely torn off
Dean Cain cameo as the 'new father'... the wife should have been Teri Hatcher :o
It's not as bad as it could have been but it's nowhere near what the 'girl' comic fans have likely been calling for when they keep asking for a female lead superhero series/film. It definitely isn't what the male fans are asking for lol.

Why? He's playing Fred Danvers not Clark Kent. The woman playing her mother is Helen Slater so that's an ex-superman and an ex-supergirl as her mother and father.

So they are throwing away the (mostly male) comic reading demographic in the hope they can make that up with girls who have little interest in the superhero genre? Good luck with that.

Based on exit polling, 40% of the viewers of Avengers were female - 44% for Guardians of the Galaxy. Perhaps having ladyparts isn't quite the barrier to watching superheroes that you think it is?

As for Supergirl, it was fine for what it was. It's a superhero show that my daughters will sit and watch, that's good enough for me.

Calista Flockhart really needs to sue her plastic surgeon though :D

That's with the adaptations of male biased comics. What Supergirl looks like it will do is fail to engage males, leaving less than half the expected viewership. And that assumes the female audience will be happy to replace looking at Chris Evans, RDJ, Hemsworth, etc with the more aspirational idea of supergirl-power. I think women like the current Marvel movies because they are good characters and good stories that appeal widely. Trying to do something that appeals particularly to girls will in fact be less attractive to both males and females. It's patronizing to females, and a complete turn-off to males to try and make Supergirl into an Ugly Betty show.

If the show is good, it will attract everyone, if it's poor, I'm pretty sure it won't do well just because it's girly, even with female viewers. Unless they are going for the Power-puff/under 10 demographic.

This is one of the bigger problems with the show, the supporting characters around Supergirl, they're all completely unrealistic, i have never met a straight male that Beta in my life and for gods sake he has a sewing machine in his apartment!!

Nail. On. Head.

The absolute best they can hope for is about half what Agents Of Shield are doing, i don't know if that's enough to keep it afloat

I lasted 20 minutes in the pilot before thinking 'this isn't for me'. The whole Ugly Betty, Devil Wears Prada set-up really doesn't appeal. As others have said, this is surely aimed at girls.

Personally I think this is going to bomb. I'd be surprised if it sees out the whole season, and I'd be amazed if it gets renewed.

Certainly could be the case. Perhaps they like the fact there are strong female characters front and centre.

Ah, no, that must be it - women are so easily led by some totty

To keep the male interest up what they need to do is say that randomly throughout the series when SG, as Kara, is running off to become SG sometimes she'll have forgotten to put her costume on underneath so when she rips her shirt open towards camera...... you know what I'm getting at.

Actually that wouldn't keep my interest, I'd just google the screenshots.

Yes, as part of the current formula. Not as part of a different formula that tries to target women by insisting that women are interested in fashion, Ugly Betty, Devil Wears Prada, oh and here's some comic book superhero stuff too.

When women go to see the Marvel movies, do you think they are interested in ScarJo's bum like the men are, or do you think they are looking at Hemsworth's biceps or RDJ's eyes? Of course not, you think women are above all that and are only thinking of the social impact of strong female characters in society and how that affects their lives directly. Girl Powa!

Ah, no, that must be it - women are so easily led by some totty

You'd be surprised what a good leading man can do for a woman wanting to see a movie. In that respect they are no different from men who have favourite actors/actresses.

As opposed to making your leading character a pretty blonde ditzy young woman with super powers who works in a fashion magazine. Yeah, everyone over ten identifies with or aspires to that, especially with the tedious and outdated girl-power meme. It's just not a serious show, it's aimed at girls, like Hanna Montana was.

Captain Marvel will show how it is done by showing Carol Danvers as a grown woman with powers who fights for what she believes and those weaker than herself. She's not going to be ditzy, she's not going to worry about dates with boys, it's going to be made for everyone, not just for young girls. That probably comes down to the way that DC's characters just tend to be more simplistic than Marvel's.

I never said it was an issue... it was funny as anyone old enough would have spotted it yet the target audience wouldn't have lol

missed that, always picture her as a blonde

you not seen facebook/instagram and all the 'drool' posts over male totty from women lol

You be surprised at the comments from women about Chris Evans, RDJ, and Hemsworth (Hemsworth in particular) if us men said half those things about actresses we'd be branded misogynist. It's a big reason the Marvel universe appeals to women.

While not the strongest pilot I was happy to see the new supergirl plays the character much like that of the 80's film with Helen Slater. I had a major crush on her when I was a kid so I see no reason I can't have one on the new actress lol.

Ok that was pretty terrible. But I am also quite sure I am not the target audience. My 6 and 5 year old children enjoyed it.
