What film did you watch last night?

Its a short story/novella of his. Didn't really translate well to film. :)

Yeah I knew it was a short-story / novella, I just meant that having never read it, I could only assume that it would have been a lot better in the original format.

It certainly had the feel of a good story about it, but there were aspects of the film let it down badly.

Jupiter Ascending 2/10. We both thought this was a awful film. Nearly turned it off half way through but decided to see it to the end. That was a mistake.

The Last Push. If we sent a white man and a black man into space, would the black perform as well as the white? This movie explores that intriguing scenario. The results may surprise you! 6/10.

Spy. Quite amusing. Statham did a great job here, but ultimately it's the usual formula with nothing new to offer. 5/10.

If you've ever wondered what would happen if Solaris and Event Horizon had a ******* love child, wonder no more! Infini is here to answer that question. This film's unusual premise had massive potential, which was sadly thrown away by the scriptwriters. We're offered three different plot strands, any of which would be perfect on its own. None of them are properly developed, and only one is actually concluded. 5/10.

The Dark. Despite uneven acting and a confused plot that can't decide what the hell is going on or where it's even going, this film deserves credit for allowing Sean Bean to reach the end alive and with all his major organs intact. 5/10.

Errors of the Human Body. The human body is not perfect. It has errors. This film examines some of them. They're not as interesting as you might think. 4/10.

Foxcatcher

Outstanding psychological thriller. Intense, very intense. Reminded me of the The Shining in an odd way. I wasn't sure initially but it grows on you and it's a film you dwell on lots after seeing it.

9/10

Body of Lies, 7/10.

Not bad at all, though such a convoluted plot can be a little hard to follow at times. At least, that's how I found it anyway (kind of like Syriana).

I know what you mean about the Shining, but it just didn't really work for me.

I'd struggle to give it much above 6/10, it just left me feeling like I'd watched a whole lot of not very much, progressing at a very slow pace.

I can see that the pace of the film was probably meant to add to the intensity, but perhaps it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Dracula untold.

I didn't know what to make of it. I've always loved the Dracula story, especially the concept that he was driven to become Dracula by love. However, one thing was badly thought out.

How can a man as evil as Vlad, who went around massacring and impaling people suddenly turn into such a caring family man? People like Vlad the Impaler were born evil and died evil.

Other than that, the rest was a decent fantasy romp, and I always like to see Charles Dance on screen.

Ending strongly suggested a sequel. I give it 6/10, and I would watch a sequel.

Stephen King's : The Langoliers

Only way I can really summarise this is that it has the feel of a pretty bad film, based on what I can only assume would be a good book.

The premise of the story was certainly enough to keep me interested, but there's some dodgy writing and acting throughout and some comedy 1990's special effects towards the end.

I read the book in 1997. It was superb. I think it was one of a number of Stephen King stories in a collected work titled 'Five past Midnight' IIRC. See if you can pick a copy up on eBay.

The Imitation Game - Fascinating depiction of the lives of those amazing people at Bletchley Park during WW2 and the last years of Alan Turing's life. Great performances all round and an ultimately uplifting but incredibly sad story. 4/5

Insomnia (2002) 7/10

Al Pacino, Robin Williams a bit of Hilary Swank- Directed by Chris Nolan

Mostly entertaining cop cat and mouse type drama, set in Alaska at Summer (24h daylight for what that's worth, as the main plot driver?) with a bit of a twist. Its not great and its a bit facepalmy at points but it's predictably watchable.
