2,000 migrants tried to enter channel tunnel last night!

Living on an island was a good way to keep invaders away.Until someone had the bright idea to build a tunnel to the mainland.

I think this a good test run for when the zombie apocalypse comes and we need to keep the hordes out. We can practice now and learn lessons for the inevitable.

Why can't we just send some of our troops over there to protect the port and tunnel? Surely that's cheaper than tonnes of food and goods being destroyed due to contamination...

Then just send france the wage bill for sending over our troops to protect the port/tunnel, since france seems completely incompetent at dealing with these migrants.

Because before you know it the entire French border will be patrolled by British forces. Give a man a hand and all that.

The French are seeing how far they can go with this.

The problem is that it is really not in the interests of the French government to expend any effort to sort this out. By letting these people live in utter squalor in camps that are barely fit for human habitation they encourage them to leave France. By leaving France that shifts the burden (harsh word, not my opinion) of caring for these individuals to another country, the French government doesn't have to find the money or the infrastructure to deal with thousands of refugees and they also get to save money on policing the Eurotunnel besides.

Completely screwed up situation, I've always said that I'm in favour of genuine asylum (ie going to a country where you're not going to be shot, killed, beheaded, etc) but I can't help but feel that a lot of these cases are not about genuine asylum but are people seeking the best life they can to the detriment of others. I wish I was smart enough to come up with a solution though, because I can't find one.

Strong assertion is strong. Fancy providing any evidence whatsoever? How come people are still sending stuff via the tunnel, if cargo container is better? What if it's not, or container ship capacity is full, etc... you must be wrong if people are still using the tunnel, unless they're thick/you're far brighter than them...

If its food then yes it has to be destroyed due to contamination.

+1 for brick it up. ;)

They say they had 200 security staff that's 10-1. Police where called so they say but can someone enlighten me as to why no arrests?

That isn't proving what you've said . Try again.

And that's one type of product, rather than the tunnel overall... and you're clearly wrong with that type of product given it's still transported via the tunnel...

but it shows the food industry were already worried before it all properly even kicked off.

I'd imagine a large percent of the channel tunnel shipping is agricultural given that Europe isn't known as a great exporter of electrical goods

Presumably because they would then actually need to treat them as illegal immigrants.

That figures pass the buck so to say, typical French attitude.

Most white goods and electronic goods are shipped by sea, so the majority of goods going through the tunnel will be perishable goods.

Jesus if it was white goods/electronic the boys would be there grafting. ;)
Tin of boot polish and am coming home with a few 50 inch Tvs/graphics cards etc! :p

If we were Russia, I'm sure a load of Russian shock troops would have gone to the Calais area 'on holiday' to give the migrants a nice warm welcome!
