One of my mates whom I am going cycling with to Corsica has just returned from a holiday to find his garage had been broken into and all his bikes have been stolen. He's absolutely devastated. He had a fairly inexpensive fixie but his pride and joy titanium, van Nicholas frame, self build bike has gone. He's absolutely gutted.

What's more is that his contents insurance only covers up to £1k per bike. His self build was worth at least £2.5K.

:(

Not what you want when you return home.

I checked when I upgraded the bike with our contents insurance & it cost me an extra £3.55 a year to cover the bike up to a value of £3,000
Well worth it for piece of mind.

I rang Halifax, whom I have contents insurance with and they said that I didn't need to specify items like bikes, no matter the cost. I will ring them again tonight though to be doubly sure.

My bikes are covered up to £1k per bike and £2k in total stored outside, which is sufficient for my 3 bikes in the metal shed they're in. Insurance is up for renewal soon and this'll be one of the things I check for.

The feeling of simple purity you get when you put your fixed gear bike back together but you haven't put the brake back on yet. That.

I had my bike stolen from my conservatory along with other bits, the insurance just gave me a credit for the value to spend.

was very hassle free in terms of the insurance company, gutted for your friend I know that feeling of pure dread, I still get it now if I leave the bike at work or it just isn't in the conservatory for whatever reason.

I also now bolt it to the wall with my other bikes and 2 new yorker U locks and a motorbike chain....made me super paranoid, sad that you have to lock things up in your own house!

Has anyone done this Fred Whitton Challenge? wouldn't mind giving this a bash.

I did it in 2010. Still my worst day ever on a bike.

It's probably not that bad though. I was still quite new to cycling at the time and had no idea how to prepare or pace myself.
I think I could do it fairly easily now - but i'm never going back :p

Well.

I had no idea Box hill was so easy. Nor Leith Hill, nor Whitedowns. Had a lovely charity ride with a friend today, nice and gentle/relaxed.

I want to do it but getting on the proper event never seems to happen. I think unsupported is what my main cycling group will end up doing soon.

Chris Boardman was on the radio the other week saying that there are no difficult hills, only difficult speeds. Bet you can't KoM Box Hill ;)

But yeah, I'm sure the little Southern bumps seem like nothing after some time in the Alps.

Going by the spec the marin must have had 23c tyres but it was the narrow fork clearance that gave me problems with chromoplastics P35. These have a cut out so were a lot easier to set up.

Thanks for that mate, gives me another guard to investigate/research! :)

Gutted! He should be able to hire one in Corsica no problems (I would think, it's a fairly popular cycling area).

Hope he's learnt to get his bikes properly insured! Fingers crossed he gets that custom build back as it sounds quite unique (will stand out hopefully).

No they weren't. They were within his locked garage, which itself forms part of the house, but they didn't bother going through the garage internal door to the rest of the house, thankfully.

The fact they didn't makes it sound very targetted! :(

Bikes are going to have to live outside at our new place but not until we get an Asgard shed, a load of ground anchors and discrete CCTV. *******s will have to put some effort in if they want something.

Just received this in the post lol
