I use cheapo cables on all my bikes - it's the outers that are important. Crappy outers make a huge difference (especially for brakes), whereas the difference for inners is negligable.
Good choice, I have been going through the same descision and opted for a set of Shimano RS81 C35 with GP4000 II to replace my cheapy RS21s. Was going for a set of Fulcrum racing zeros but the RS81s were going for £370 on Ribble which was too good to turn down.

From the factory my BB lasted 6k.
The replacement (steel bearings from a bearing shop
) I had pressed in and the proper loctite (641 from memory) used by the LBS who are a Cervelo dealer. Done 12k since and no problems, however when the first one failed it went from being good to ruined inside 2km so it was a sudden failure.

Judging by the reviews, if looked after they should last you ages as they are bomb proof.

True. Those Jagwire and Shimano Ultegra cables I gave you to put on the Cotic seem crappy with the rubbish default outers that came with it.

Yeah decent video, wish the UCI would just drop it and not bother with allowing them in the peleton. Waste of time imo.

I understand that you don't like them but allowing new things in the peleton isn't a waste of time for this any more than it is for any other new thing that is allowed in.

But there is just no value add. Cameras in the peleton, great. GPS live tracking great. Disc brakes, meh.
Not to mention the issues surrounding neutral service, meaning that if a rider wants a spare they're now going to have to wait for the team car. Its just introducing new things for the sake of it, there is no improvement to the racing, and its just going to add to budgets.

I agree, don't see the point myself. A mix of disc and rim brakes in the peloton is an insane idea too. Even on rim brakes your tyres give way before you run out of braking force, even more so in the wet.
I really don't understand this opinion. Discs will allow for later and more controlled braking on downhills. When was the last time you watched any Enduro and saw V-brakes?
I think disc brakes are being driven a lot by carbon rims, which as we all know have decidedly *interesting* braking characteristics in the wet, and don't behave well with heat buildup for clinchers
I'm very interested to see how carbon rims go when they no longer need a brake surface - I imagine they'll get lighter and because they'll be easier to use with clinchers, will take off in a big way.
It's all just a bit needless though, and the through-axles are definitely a bit silly.

Except they won't unless it's pouring with rain as the GCN video shows, which was done using carbon wheels.
But the riders won't be leaning the bike over as much and generally soft pedal a bit more as they go down like skittles so easily so speeds won't be quite as high and rim brakes will be dragged a bit while riding to stop water build up.
You have a ton of traction on a mtb and can brake harder than a V brake can, hence why you see 180mm or 200mm rotors and massive tyres compared.
I think lowering the min bike weight, adding live telemetry and video would add more to the marketing and viewing appeal.
the bike manufacturers love disc brakes because anyone who wants to adopt them needs a new frameset as a minimum

I can see discs causing lots of bunch smashes too, especially at lower cats where riders are less experienced and may not train in groups quite as often

Personally I'd rather spend £600 on a new frame that'll last forever than spend the same amount every year or two on new wheels as the rims get eaten away
Obviously that's a completely different scenario to racing, but for the average guy like me, discs make financial sense if I want to buy fancy wheels!
