Windows 10

if you do the upgrade it keeps old windows files behind in case you wish to roll back to your previous OS like windows.old etc

clean install is that you format the drive so nothing on there at all and just have the W10 install so no roll back option and re install all your programs

Best way to upgrade:

Download two windows updates that give you the reserve free upgrade icon in systray.
Reboot
Reserve your free copy.
Download windows 10 download tool.
Say upgrade and keep files.
Then upgrade to windows 10.
Easy.

I have done 4 or 5 pc this way now. not any issues and all drivers auto install.

Agree - just done this. Clicking on taskbar gives only spinning circles. Download + keep files and apps (I always thought I had programs on my computer). Very good install - no problems in Device Manager.

That's by far one of the hardest way.
Go to MS site. Download media creation tool. Download w10. Double click on setup file. Select what ever option you want from keep everything to keep nothing. Zero need to mess about with updates and reserving.

I did that on one pc without reserving and when it logged in to windows 10 it was not activated.

So I noticed some apps were still unusually starting up very slowly, even the uninstaller under control panel. I decided to do a clean install (did an upgrade with keep nothing before) as well as dumping the old M4 64GB (can't believe it's over 4 years old!) and moving the OS to my 840 Evo game SSD, and now everything is back up to speed.

Steps 1 to 3 are not nessasary.

Download, run, select upgrade, done. All you need to do before hand is make sure you are on 7 SP1 or 8.1 and activated.

Finally got round to installing yesterday and so far, so good. However, I can't get my Synology NAS to show up in explorer. It's there under Other Devices and I can ping it but it wont show. I'm logging in with a local account and password (not a pin) and I've tried entering the credentials but still no luck.

Anyone help with this?

Has anyone else not used Cortana? On first boot, I turned it off and the live web searching from Start menu.

This wasn't a tinfoil hat move, just a cba move.

Would you say it's worth giving it a go?

me on the other hand never use it and have need for contra either so don't use it on my PC

I use Google Now on my phone, because I can't be bothered to type on my phone usually.

But on the Desktop, I'd feel like a dork talking to my pc :p

Cortana doesn't work with my region/language settings... not that I'm bothered by it...

Seconded...

This has turned into an utter pain in the proverbial.

Microsoft won't activate Windows so I have to install Windows 8 and start again.

The Product Key for Windows 8 on the bottom of the laptop won't work either when I try to install Windows 8.

Probably because the win 8 you are trying to install is not the one tied to the key on the laptop! It has to be the same version.

I've only just set up a NAS (a Lenovo ix2 thing) and had issues connecting to it from Windows 10 where I had no issues from Win 7 or 8.1 machines. Eventually worked out that even though the PC is in the domain WORKGROUP, the user it was trying to log in with was on a domain of my PC's name (to be fair, it was written on the log in box, but I failed to notice it). Once I tried to log in with the username WORKGROUP\Username rather than just Username, it logged in perfectly first go. Not sure if it's the same with your NAS, but might be worth a shot.
