The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

Really enjoyed using em-5ii on my recent holiday, even with weight of the 12-40mm I just walked around holding camera in one hand (with finger strap) - made the whole experience much more "impulsive".

Can you tell me which finger strap you are using? I'm looking for one.

I think it's strange that you can't get Olympus kit in Dubai, i was looking for dealers and there are none. shame, could have got some stuff tax free! Apparently, Olympus pulled out of dubai a couple of years ago for some reason.

M5ii + 12-40 have turned up, plus 2 additional batteries :)

Will play around with it over the next few days.

Awesome stuff, enjoy! Worth going through all the menus to get familiar. I've got a few start up videos that I've yet to watch from creative live. Apparently there's quite a few features hidden away. I think I've found all the main ones.

Yeah agree on the menus. Tonnes of them and some are 3 or 4 deep. You got some links to some good videos please? Want to make sure I haven't missed some things

Gutted I missed a wrongly listed 14-40 pro 2.8 lens today on eBay which doesn't come up if you search for it and went for £221 and I missed it by one minute :(

A steal at that price.

Yeah video links would be good. I feel like a noob with this camera. So many AF modes! :D

Yeah the AF modes had me scratching my head for a while and had to resort to the manul :)

Also first time with he camera i set pic quality to S for "superfine" which it wasnt of course and S for small. lol

When will men learn hat we have to read the manual sometimes lol

For those people into sports/wildlife phots i the m43 finally gets some decent long range lense next year

Panasonic-Leica 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 and Olympus 300mm F4.

The panasonic is a monster at 200-800mm effective

Panny also announced post-focus technology back in July which I'd missed, could be really useful for some applications (handheld macro, maybe?).

Enabled by 4K video capture and Panasonic's DFD (Depth From Defocus) technology, Post Focus will allow users to select a focus point for an image after capture. Unlike true light field capture, Post Focus works by shifting focus during a 30fps burst of 4K footage. As such, we'd expect it to have somewhat limited utility for moving subjects, and shutter speeds will likely have to be short enough in duration to not result in blur from the rack focusing during the burst (unless the lens stops 30 times a second for each burst exposure, which seems unlikely). In playback, the user can touch the LCD to 'set focus' on a particular point and the camera will extract a still image with the specified plane of focus.

A firmware update will be available for the newly-minted Panasonic Lumix GX8 and Lumix FZ300 'and some other models' in late 2015 to enable Post Focus, according to the manufacturer.

Was playing with the 7-14 last night...the focusing distance on it was shocking. When it reached the limit the object must have been 5mm from the front element!

Will show you guys tonight!

That is pretty darn close!! Gotta be careful I guess with the bulbus front element on that lens too :)

Guys, a quick question regarding sensors in these cameras, just "browsing" the different models from Olympus earlier today and noticed the following -

EM10 - APS-C
EM5-2 - M42 sensor
EM1 - Live MOS

What are the difference between the 3? I am guessing APS-C is the biggest sensor of the three but that I realise doesn't necessarily make it the best. Be good to hear your thoughts.

em10 is aps-c? since when?

ALl three sensors are the same size in all three cameras AFAIK.

but there are differences between models. The v2 of the em5 has the same sensor as the em1 now since the update which is an updated version of the one in the mark 1. These are still both Live Mos AFAIK though.

Pretty sure the EM10 is live MOS too.

There isn't a whole lot between the sensors on those 3 - check dxo for scores to see for yourself. I'd discount sensor if trying to decide which one to buy and go with size/features/price.

Like you say, very small differences on sensor between the cameras.

The main differences come in with features like the 40mp 8 shot picture, better focusing in the em1,waterproofing, image stabilising (whether 3 or 5 axis), veiwfinder res, rear screen res, whether it tilts or swings out are the major things off the top of my head.

Fundamentally all three will probably take exactly the same pic with the same lens and a better lens will make much more of a difference than the body.

Just depends on which features are important to you.

I was all set to buy a em10 mark 2 as didnt need any of the features the 5 offered but managed to buy one cheap on ebay so ended up with the mark 2 5.

From reviews the mark 2 of the 5 or 10 seem to be much better bodies than the older versions and offer better features and slightly improved sensors,

Ahh ok nice on thanks everyone. I think it was an error on the camera sellers website that said it was aps-c. Should have checked the manufacturers site!

My main plan for whichever body i choose is for street photography, so will be pairing it to a 17mm F1.8 lens. I did a year of two ago own an EM5 mk1 which I found to be very good for this purpose but not so good for other uses hence I sold it, but this time I would like to pick up something with the sole purpose of street work as I have my dlsr for my other things.

are you sure about that? i read it that all the sensors are identical its only the processing chip that's changed
