The µ43 thread - welcome to the really dark side

are you sure about that? i read it that all the sensors are identical its only the processing chip that's changed

That's when it gets tricky as it's hard to say. Some review sites might say it's the sensor that has had a slight improvement when they mean the processing chip has changed.

I've read in more than one review the mark 2 em5 has now got the same sensor as the em1 but you might be right and they mean the same processing chip.

The are all listed as live MOS so prob are all the same. The processing chip can and does then make the difference in image quality.

Here you go, vultures :p

What other uses did you find the 5 lacking out of interest?

Mainly wildlife and sports use, around tracking and such.

I have tried a few different brands of CSC and not really found any of them truly up to it. I realise its potentially risky writing that in this thread but they were my findings at the time. We are talking a year to two years back, perhaps newer models have got better, but the DSLR is still king for me in those instances. For my other uses such as landscape, street, portrait, still life etc CSC was perfectly fine.

the EM1 has phase autofocus as well as contrast and is probably the best of the CSC for continous focus tracking but i dont think any of them come close to DSLR yet.

And (decnt) long lens have been in short supply but from early next year there is the 100-400 (200-800mm) lens and 300 f4 lens coming out so thats about to change.

That's pretty impressive. Looks marginally closer than even my Samyang fisheye can get.

I've seen how close fisheyes can focus, this is pretty much on par! It's nuts!

Also, I'm amazed at how sharp it is at that distance.

Off to Bruges this weekend, will be taking the new weapons :)

Thanks for the info, haven't been keeping up with thats coming when in the Olympus world for a while. Good to know they have planes to bring out some long lenses and that autofocus is getting better and better. I am sure its not many years away before they become on a par with DSLR for the users I would like.

well the em1 is the same as the omd-10 mk1, and the em5 mk1 and looking on Olympus site and sensor tech it seems to confirm they all use the same sensor, no new tech for the mk11 versions. forget reviews for tech info they are not reliable :D. checking on tog forums suggests the same. mind you its a great sensor so if it isn't broke why fix it:p

Yeah true. It would seem all the sensors are indeed the same. The processing engines appear to be different which then results in differences in the pictures from each model/ generation.

Mind you they all take great pics :)

What I would love to know is if the phase af from the omd1 comes from the firmware or it has extra electronics in it. Would love my em5 to get phase af via a firmware update one day.

Very good point... looking on Wiki though I think it requires certain hardware, some way of splitting to image to a AF detector. I can sort of understand how it works on a DSLR, but mirrorless... not sure :(

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autofocus

Shame :(

Yesterday I assigned my two FN buttons to focus peaking and zoom... those two together make getting a tight focus on something small much easier. Need a macro lens though as kit doesn't cut it :(

Yeah I seem to be watching loads of 60mm macro lens on eBay am. ;)

The marco add on lens on my 40-150 does a half decent job though and gets it to 1:2 but leaves me wanting more and the f2.8 as well of course for more light.

Ring flashes seem awkward on the Olympus system. No specific one, you have to buy and adaptor so you can fit their ring flash from the four thirds system and the adopters are price too.

Have you got the 40-150mm? the raynox dcr-250seems to work well with that lens.

Though i must admit i have orderd a em-10 mk1 with kit lens, 40-150mm and the 60mm macro while the cash back is on the macro lens. I'll add a 45mm f1.8 on my birthday in a couple of months, for just over £900 i reckon that's a fairly good set up.

Would anyone choose the EM1 over the EM5 MKII with the pending firmware update?

I was very very tempted. The em1 will basically get all the extra features that the mark 2 5 and 10 has.

And the em1 go for peanuts on ebay compared to the 5's and 10s as well.

Plus the em1 has phase detection af as well as constrast which is something the 5 and 10 will never get.

The only reason i didnt go with a em1 was i got a silly bargain of a mark 2 5 on ebay.

£519 with 4 genuine batteries (which cost £40 each) and the em1 couldnt compete really.

If it hadnt been for that, i would have definitely bought an em1.
