*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Well I have not had long with the DK2 and already I am sold on it. This game just went up to 11 with the Rift and although you lose quite a lot of detail and reading is quite hard, the immersion is out of this world (no pun intended). So much depth and it was like this game was meant for VR.

I have the HUD set to green as recommended but maybe I need to fiddle with some settings to try and clear things up a little but plenty of time to play :)

There is no atmospheric flight :p
Are they not including a few on release?

So the teraforming side of it, could you in theory go flying off waaaay out into the middle of no where and start to build your own colony then for instance, if thats possible then its certainly something that would be worth the additional funds..
In theory, yes.
In actuality, that will likely cost such a MASSIVE amount of Credits (a few Vigintillion Cr or something), that it's only viable for a very large multi-system faction, whereas you are just one pilot. No matter how rich you get, it's intentionally unaffordable... at least at this early stage of the game, anyway. It might come in later, but I believe they want to avoid players 'owning' and thus controlling too much of the game, based on how it failed with other games.
However, you *will* find ample work contracting for an organisation who is terraforming, from shipping to security, surveying, mining, espionage and all the myriad different processes... or you can go down one of the criminal routes, too!

I love elite but there is absolutely no comparison between the two when it comes to player interactions. Elite is missing even basic stuff such as bounty and mission sharing. Maybe in 10 years and after many expansions focusing on player interactions it might come close to what Eve is today.
That's why I said it's looking like doing it, not that it already is. Elite is still just getting started, mainly as whatever it does has to be done for 400 billion systems.

They are very different games to play, but still the same premise on many levels, from the basic tasks right up to the politics. The biggest differences are in the perspective from which you play (physically and attitudinally) as EVE is ultimately a Top-Down RTS while Elite is more a Bottom-Up hands-on/FPS, and in the skillset - EVE is numbers and brain power, while Elite is piloting skills and 'street-sense'.

Well I am blown away by the Rift and even though my eyes hurt a little, it is awesome. I think I will do a giveaway of my EDTracker when I do a review of this game with the DK2, so if anybody doesn't have one and would like one, keep an eye on my vids.

Remember you can "lean in" to read stuff also. Its great looking around the ship aint it and coming up to space stations they are huge.

Did you do your IPD settings etc ?
Not sure how optimized horizons beta vr is though.

Just had a play with that ipd thingy (didn't know about it lol) and much better now cheers.

Not tried Horizons and just stuck with ED but gonna fire it up now

Am I correct in thinking that if I want to change my CMDR's name I will have to delete my current one and start again? Or is their a way to have two characters that I'm not aware off?
Try sending a ticket to support, can't hurt.

Betelguese :)

Great pic! Hope you remembered to pack SPF9000 sun cream :p

I wish you wouldn't post stuff like this, makes it all the more difficult to resist purchasing one myself...

So every one of us EVE players are arses and disgusting? I think the more likely situation is that you're way too sensitive.
Nah, we're definitely all arses!! :D
I got bored halfway through my free trial of Spreadsheets In Space, so I just took my little ship and went to shoot people up in the end... complete and utter arse, me!!:p

This is about as bad as it gets... usually it's a lot faster, certainly in my experience.

Ah even that isn't too bad, cool cheers.

On an unrelated not, Got stuck the other night in a space port with a griefer just shooting down my little sidewinder over and over... By the 6th kill or so I finally managed to give him the slip, he was AFK perhaps at just the right time! Haha.

But everyone you come across in EVE is a arse. At least on 4 or 5 times i tried to get into it. The player base is disgusting.

That depends on the person. If you come to the game full of self entitlement and attitude (typical elite or sc forum user) you'll be griefed until you quit and there will be no one to protect you.

However, if you come humble and full of cute noob questions as you should be being new to the game people will throw millions towards your way for free and guide you through everything.

The group I play games with have all recently bought this game, and I wanna try it out.

But I'm just skeptical as I've never really liked the thought of space games as it comes across to me as slow and boring :/

And with how much it costs it would be an expensive gamble.

I dunno what to do. I am intrigued though.

You jump into an USS and find a pirate, you despatch them and as they're trying to run away they drop some cargo. Yet the moment you get anywhere near scooping it up two or three ships appear right on top of you and destroy you before you can even see what, or who, they are?

Does anyone else hate that?

I've only ever had that with the gold floating in space ones, never dropped on someone md then been jumped myself..

Typical 'Gamer', in my experience... at least from the last 15 years.
I've seen that type on all manner of game forums, from Tomb Raider to Freelancer, to CoD, to people on Farcebook playing Farmville!!

Depends what you like in a game.
There is a slow bit in the flying around from place to place. You have to build speed and slow down, bearing in mind you're travelling many times the speed of light... no different to braking in a car.
There are boring bits, such as figuring out which weapons and equipment are the best balance, or which commodities will sell best along your intended routes... no different to speccing up a PC, I suppose.
Then there are the faster bits, such as dropping in on a warzone and having forty-odd enemy ships blitzed across your scanner, as you duck and dive to avoid the bigger targets and hone in on the ones you can cope with, all while dodging the nasty little beggars that are trying to blatt you, while also managing your power distribution, watch your shields, keep your temperatures down and so on.

In fact, I would liken it to learning to drive - Initially there is SOOOOOO much to think about and it's a real challenge. But once you get comfortable, it's very enjoyable... and once you get good, it's about being good and feeling good and just hooning around the galaxy being awesome... right up until you get just a touch complacent and then some NPC puts you firmly back in your place, whereupon you find a new nemesis and a new challenge!

All in all, it's a very hands-on game, pretty much like a space sim, but still intended as fun rather than complete realism.

Yet the moment you get anywhere near scooping it up two or three ships appear right on top of you and destroy you before you can even see what, or who, they are?
This is why you leave it a few moments, to see who drops in.
Pirates are lovable rogues, which means they usually have friends... That's often who's got you, if not the cops catching you in the act of stealing cargo!
Lesson: Watch the top-left comms panel (because NPCs usually warn you just before they attack), keep your eyes on the scanner and your ears pinned for the sound of a ship dropping out of Frame Shift!

Torn between this and Star Citizen. A year ago, this looked the more interesting. Recently though, my allegiances seem to be switching.
Haven't played a space sim since X2!
But, it's apples and oranges given the states of development - think I'll be waiting another year. My current GPU could probably do with replacing to play either of these anyway.

After popping the little Sidewinder, who did say something witty in the comms panel, I did leave it a while. The moment I approached his dropped cargo (Palladium) and opened the cargo-scoop three blips appeared on my scanner close enough that I could've spat at them and I was insta-popped.

Can anyone in the know tell me whether this loadout seems OK?

What percentage power usage do people aim for?

I'm still having an issue with the lasers stopping firing even when the charge bars aren't empty. I'm beginning to wonder whether my trigger button on the gamepad is just broken!
I've just had a thought. I think I might have been stupid.

Where are the small hardpoints placed on the Adder? Are they under the nose, and the reason I can't fire is because the target ship is above me?

Whenever I kill a solitary pirate, I always instantly bang full power to engines and systems, and get ready to press the jump key immediately, because the game often seems to react to that happening by jumping in some very dangerous mates of the fellow you just killed.

In fact, just did exactly that a moment ago - and finally jumped with 1% hull left! Phew!

No, atmospheric planets are not included in season 2.

In theory, yes.

Not even in theory, you cannot do it in game, though what can and has happened is community groups having FD put them into the game as factions and a couple (I think) of stations have been constructed off the back of community desires.
So every one of us EVE players are arses and disgusting? I think the more likely situation is that you're way too sensitive.
That'd be a hell of a generalisation but I have to admit, the overall impression of the eve community when I used to play was not at all positive, that was years ago though, it was very dog eat dog back then and not a particularly pleasant place to be, I am exceedingly grateful that the Elite community is vastly different.

Ahhh, the classic sidewinder bait, if you drop into a USS and there is a lone sidewinder you can almost guarantee a couple of it's friends will be along shortly, be prepared :)

Not sure where they are but that would most certainly stop them from firing, deploy hardpoints and use the external cam to have a look, or look where they are in outfitting :)
