Gaming 2500k cpu upgrade? 6700k or 5820k

I've currently got a Q6600 (@3 GHz) + GTX 670, i5 3570K + 980 Ti & my very recent i7 5820K + 980 Ti sat at home. The Q6600 is more than capable of running the majority of 1080p games I've tried on it. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter runs at 60 fps on high settings and that's quite a demanding demo/game it only suffers when I increase the texture scaling above 100% and I think that's because the GTX 670 only has 2GB of VRAM.

The i5 3570K was playing all my games at 3440x1440 with the 980 Ti at high refresh rates though I usually cap everything at 75 fps anyway. I only found a few instances where the i5 was getting bogged down such as in the Boston City areas in FO4 where it would dip to 50 fps. The i7 5820K in similar circumstances was able to maintain the 75 fps cap with the odd drop when things loaded in the background I think.

So yeah there are circumstances where the i7 is showing it's muscle. I probably should have just bought an i7 3770K and stuck with that for a while longer but I decided to virtualise some of my hardware devices and currently run a software router/firewall (Sophos UTM) in a Hyper V VM.

So far that's had negligible impact on my i5 running in the background let alone the 6 core i7 (I had to RMA the motherboard last week unfortunately) which hopefully I'll get back this week.

I've just installed a new 6700k system :)

Without going into the reasons why I didn't get a 5820k, from what I've seen today from a gaming perspective I don't think anyone's going to be disappointed with their choice. One of those situations where you can't loose :)

If your main use-case is gaming then I would say absolutely NOT is it worth going to a new platform, be it X99 or Skylake.

From my current build with Sandy at 4+ GHz paired with a mid to high-end GPU (970), at 2560x1440, the GPU is still the bottleneck by far.

Perhaps in the next 2 to 3 generations this will shift more significantly, which is not to say I will wait that long to upgrade but rather that a full platform overhaul is the last thing I would spend my money on at this point. A GPU upgrade would serve much better in all gaming related scenarios.

Why did you pick the 6700k? Looking at these two chips myself.

The 5820k overclocks to a good 4.4Ghz. It is just as good at gaming as the 6700k, plus you get the extra cores for other stuff like rendering and the like.

Taking into account they are roughly the same price you would be a mug not to go with the x99 chip.

I can understand going 6600k over x99 for £200ish saving but 6700k is the same price so your just saving on the cheaper z 170 motherboards.

thanks for all the replies. I have finally decided to go for a 5820k build.

I have the itch and my gf will have my 2500k, my parents will have my gf's old PC. So nothing's going to waste. While it all works out for the better I want to get a decent i7 build ready for a GPU upgrade further down the line.

So... not sure if its better to make a new thread but I've been looking at options.

The main question I have is about a cpu cooler and clearance for the ram modules. I was looking at a bundle from OCUK but I'm not that impressed by the cooler options, I think id prefer a h80i/h100i or a Noctua NH-D15 or D14.

My recent mini itx build i bought a Noctua fan and I was extremely impressed by the quality and performance. My current 2500k has a 212 evo.

Still debating the whole water cooling AIO and if it's worth the potential risk of leaks.

Any opinions?

In total ill need:

CPU/Board/Ram/Cpu Cooler/Case/PSU, probably budget about £800 or there abouts.

EDIT:

made a new thread for my build, thanks again everyone

Good for you! Like many others I'd say the x99 build is a better fit for you. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts after the upgrade. Keep us posted!

I've been using a noctua d14 for a good while, its an excellent air cooler.

cheers! what case do you have with the D14? my next challenge is making sure i find a case that can fit a beefy cooler like the D14/15.

I'm liking the look of the Fractal Design cases.

Fractal cases are well liked. I use a Corsair 450d, its a fairly easy case to build in. I've heard the Phanteks Enthoo cases are awesome too.

Ye I like the clean look of the case, very impressed. I heard the Phanteks are good too but a bit pricey atm.

I think ill go for a 550/650w PSU. something like a superflower or EVGA supernova.

Still debating between air or water cooling, the sensible me says air but the fun factor says AIO water cooling like a h80i/h100i.

Those are good PSUs. The evga is probably a rebadged superflower, so you could probably go with whichever's cheaper, or matches your color scheme.

The h100i is probably the best performer, and the h80i in the same ballpark as a big noctua. As I understand it, all of those should be adequate for an overclocked 5820k.

AIOs look amazing, and make it easier to access your system after building. Whereas big air coolers are probably more robust owing to the fact that they have less moving parts. That wouldn't concern me though.

Ended up picking this one I think
Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - Black

Very frustrating to see so many things pre order or out of stock. Made picking a cooler and PSU annoying. Id prefer to buy everything from one place even though 750w might be a bit overkill.

Going with this cooler too I think
NH-D15S Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler
The normal 2 fan version was out of stock ....
Turns out there is almost no difference though and you can just attach another fan essentially turning into the 2 fan version if you need to.

Looks great! 750w is over the top, but it gives you the option of multi GPU down the road :)

Someone might correct me but I doubt that cooler will hold you back :)

yep! plus i read some people think 600w is pushing the limits with an OC'd 5820k and a bigger card like a 980ti. So i guess 750w covers that in the future.

Thanks for the replies btw. Appreciate the advice.

For gaming, there is no point in upgrading from a 2500k in my opinion. Hence, I am still using a 2500k :)

As long as you have a decent CPU, its all about the GPU.
