I've been through all this last 2 weeks with various people.

Custom parts, just a regular Yaris exhaust, must be an easy fix.

I'm hoping the dealer to I'm trying to take the car in trade will be as clueless!

If anyone wants a crack at finding an exhaust for it, the plate is...

That's what most people think, until they look into it. I thought that too!

If you're trading it in, then don't even worry about it - the last 3 cars I have traded in, all they have done is look at the bodywork, not looked at anything mechanical or even taken for a test drive.

We wrongly assumed you were selling it privately, where having a MOT is pretty much a given.
 
No matter what the problem is with the exhaust, can't you just get a mechanic to weld a couple of small plates over the holes?

That's where you're going wrong - you're using the reg to try to find the exact part. You'd be much better off taking it to an exhaust fabricators - chances are they'll be able to weld it for far less than a replacement part. I had exactly the same issue with my MR2 where all the parts sites couldn't find anything through the reg, I just went to Maidstone exhausts and they charged me £40 to weld it.

That's an option I can do too, have thought about it. But I want a new car anyway, been thinking about that for about 9 months so thought I'd take the hit of less value but also less hassle, seeing I don't plan to keep the car.

First thing I asked when we had the car up on the ramp.

Notice 1 small hole immediately, which is the size of a green pea, I said "can you not just weld that ?" He said "yeah that shouldn't be a problem".

But that wasn't where the problem really is, the bigger hole is in a section of the pipe that does a turn behind a heat shield. You can put your fingers behind the heat shield and feel the hole and it’s a bigger one but can't just weld that without cutting off the heat shield or custom made that part of the exhaust from scratch.

One of the mechanic (2 were present), said "I've never seen this (configuration) before" when referring to the exhaust…he was referring how long the mid-section is. This part I can either assume no other Yaris' exhaust is like that hence he has never seen one or he was telling fibs and trying to rob me blind. Either way, the fact is the exhaust isn’t on places like ECP or Amayama even. There is also the fact that from my untrained eye, the exhaust is full of rust and it looks like a welding job would only mean a very short fix, if I am going to keep the car for longer, I need to replace it. So the choice is either a short fix and trade it in or an expensive fix and trade it in.

I am choosing Don't fix it and trade it in….let that be the dealer's problem!
 
The hole in the exhaust is just a minor point anyway, the plan was always to change the car this year.

So either spend money to fix it and replace it or just replace it and take the hit. The MOT put a deadline to things and I am just choosing to replace it.

Apart from other things that needs doing such as 4 new tyres due IMO in about 5k miles (about £400 a set…17" 205/45), MOT and Service in late April.

The Volvo I am looking only had a service 1500 miles ago, and the dealer (Sytner) who is a Land Rover dealer will do another service and MOT for the car, it also has 4 new Conti tyres on. Yes I know all these are consumables and needs doing on every car, but why put a new sets of tyres on a Yaris and get rid in 6 months if I can do it now without spending £400 on it.

There is also a small problem of a crack in the bumper from my incident with Bambi last May…frankly, I want to see an end of the car now lol

It's been a good run, actually very reliable (Bambi incident aside) up until the exhaust getting rusty. Starts every time but 5 years in a Yaris….time for a change.
 
20" wheels on a Scenic? Will people even bother buying tyres for these, even the ultra low budget stuff is going to cost what most would consider 'lots'.
