Have you got a custom fan curve? If not the 85 has been seen in reviews as it appears Nvidia have used a less than modest fan profile. 85 is fine though but the GPU will throttle to keep it from getting hotter. So id suggest try creating a fan profile with MSI afterburner which helps cool it better.
No its all box standard in my new setup. I will take a look.
IS there a profile i can download to afterburner as rathert a n00b here. or just literally slide the fan controller along

Literally slide the fan profile along or you can use the graph to set up a profile accordingly.

For those with the 1080 FE, its fixed the fan ramping up and down issue we have (had!)

Interesting, the new driver supported Mirror's Edge Catalyst, it added Hyper settings for GTX 1080 and 1070 which is a new graphics setting level higher than Ultra, took full advantage of 8GB buffer.
I will look out for benchmarks how it perform on Hyper.
Why not just wait for the 1180 or 1180ti in that case?
Ha, if that's the case, then Nvidia are actively trying to mislead consumers with the mobile chips. So you get someone buying a laptop with a 1080 in it, thinking it's like the desktop 980 you can get at the moment, but actually it's a cut-down 1080M minus a letter.

Exactly, don't get me wrong the prices at the moment are expensive for something that isn't even in stock at most places but saying just wait is getting a little bit tiring now. Last year people buying the 980ti were told to wait for Pascal, now they're being told to wait for "full-fat" Pascal. In the end they'll be waiting forever

imo, the best time to buy a graphics card is when it is released, whatever the time period between when you buy and when the next one is released you get the most usage from it by getting it as early as possible
and don't spend more than you don't mind throwing down the loo, as ultimately buying man-toys like GPU's is purely for entertainment purposes, I don't really understand people who get all het up about "losing" money on a GPU, if thats the way you feel about having spent that money then it probably says you like the money more than you like the GPU and shouldn't have bought the GPU

What's more is there is always something new coming out no matter what it is (Cars, GPUs, CPUs, anything) so just make sure you can get your use out of them before you upgrade. Beside you loose money regardless of what you buy
It's more that I'm waiting for a card capable of doing what I want. Currenly I have a GTX 970 and it does 1080p60 pretty darn well. The next card I'm looking to buy is one that will let me do 1440p100fps+ or 4k60 on a single GPU. The GTX 1080 is close, but no cigar. I think the 1080ti will be the card that will be able to do the things I want from my next upgrade. The funny thing is my 970 is barely a year old, I want to get a good lot of use out of it before I upgrade.
Of course one would be waiting forever if chasing something like price-to-performance or something. But chasing something fixed like a certain level of perfomance, eventually we'll find that something that gives us the performance we want and we'll stick with it.
To me, the frequency of upgrading depends on what price-point of card one is buying. If buying mid-tier every time like a 970, then upgrading once a generation is good enough, since the jumps in performance are bigger. If buying the bigger GPUs, then perhaps it may be best to buy every 2 generations, if not once a generation. I know folks still on their 780ti looking to upgrade with Pascal/Vega.
In the end, it comes down to what each individual wants from their GPU. Me? I want a GPU to make the most out of a 1440p144Hz monitor and I think the next one will be the one to do it.
Also, talking about maxing out, I rarely increase AA settings a lot, especially at higher resolutions. I think DSR is a good alternative for AA (especially MSAA) if one is capable of using it and AA is not as important at higher resolutions. I doubt one will be able to see much benefit for AA at resolutions like 4k.

Completely agree, I got somewhere in the region of 9 months use out of my 980's (can't remember, but I think that's about right length between them and the 980ti's), I've had my 980ti's since launch and I've used them fairly consistently since then. I'm not even going to sell them, I've had my monies worth out of them, one is going to my dad along with the rest of my rig in sig and the 2nd going to a mate who has a lower 900 series.
In the time I've owned them if I had spent as much time in the local pub as I do gaming I would have spent in the region of 10x more money.
You can keep waiting for the next big thing, or you can spend your money now, get the benefits and enjoyment from the product and then go through the same cycle next release.
Heck I don't work my ass off to leave all my money sat in a bank until the day I die and the gov takes it all away.

Could have added in other hobbies or activities, they were just what came to mind haha!
I have friends that are really into cycling, it is their hobby, they spend thousands on bikes and parts for bikes.
Also, I just don't think a lot of people get how inflation works, things do get more expensive. I keep hearing people say oh but GPU's will be a grand a pop in the future if this carries on. Yes, no ****, of course they will.
Mobile phones, cars, houses, food, petrol, holidays..... everything I can think of is more expensive now than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago.
Tell me about it i must have the same friends then re bikes they spend 1000's pounds a years on bikes parts..
i bike with them but i spend nothing like them ..but i like the old retro gear from gary fisher so when i do ride with them i kind of feel like i am riding a classic mustang or maybe more like a ford capri against there ferrari / lambo / McLaren bikes...
Re inflation nvidia are milking it re tech and price hiking as there is no real competition from AMD...
Yes it as to go up with inflation but its way too much even if you just go back two to three gens not 10 20 years but lets not start another war of words on price there is enough of that on these forums all-ready..
Never mind what this 1080 is ....high / mid end ect ....
i am hoping the 1070 will be better priced for the peeps that need them
the main problem with price of cards these days is that i know a fair few that have moved away from the pc and moved to consoles because of the prices and the pace of tech ...Which at the end of the day is a bad thing really as nvidia intel are shooting themselves in the foot...However AMD do not mind more console sales the better ....

By the time I sell my remaining 980ti I'll have had more back from them than I spent in the first place, which is why I'm not too fussed at letting them go before I get my hands on my 1080, even if it means getting a lower sale price than if I'd let them go a month ago.
I don't see how that's a spurious claim?
In any case, even if I got less for them than I had, it wouldn't have factored in to my decision to buy a 1080, even if I'd just got the 450 + 300
I'll also be getting a 1080ti, and again the resale price of the 1080 won't factor in to that decision either
You do need some still. But things like MSAAx4 or 8 become quite redundant.
