Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Why? so you can buy a 1070? What a way to reward AMD for bringing competition.

Competition is health and helps people like us, the consumers.

Most people already know if they want to buy red or green so they just wait for a drop.

If he buys a 1070, he will be rewarding Nvidia for dropping their prices to be competitive with AMD. Swings roundabouts.

So may Nvidia fanboys only want to see AMD do well to drive down prices of Nvidias cards...

I think it has two advantages.

  • The vast majority of people will get card at a great price and performance in way of the 480 and also 470
  • The minority (Mostly people like us on this forum) will hopefully see Nvidia price drops in response and buy a 1070/1080 because they desire higher performance

I don't quite see how a new card that gives the 980 a run for its money will affect the 1070/1080 pricing... they're in a class of their own and AMD is not challenging them or threatening sales with their product. I see Nvidia pricing holding firm, and quite probably going north if Brexit happens.

If Nvidia drop prices it will be due to AMD. They would not otherwise so your point is moot.

Some German prices with 19% VAT included from a system builder:

*****

The GT730 is around £45 from a few retailers so a rough estimate of the price is:
1.)RX460 ~£100
2.)RX470 ~ £160
3.)RX480 4GB ~ £210
4.)RX480 ~ £240

£210 is too much for the 4gig card. Needs to be <£200 by a good margin.

If the 8gb is £240, it needs to be a ton better than an 8gb 390, which is already available for £240.

Both 480 prices are a little too expensive if the rumoured perf is true.

They seem consistent with what we heard before, and the price does seem quite high for the RX480 4GB too - $199 even with VAT added should be around £165.

£45 seems a big premium.

Well done to AMD for doing so, when they do and they will be rewarded with sales.

Then Nvidia will be competitive buy also dropping, then they will be rewarded with sale.

And so on.

If AMD has faster tech on sale before Nvidia then I am sure AMD would do the exact same, its business.

+1 - What I was trying to say yesterday, but I got backlash :D

Well it depends - if rumours / leaks turn out correct the 480 exceeds the 980 and if OC'd (beast mode custom ver) could perform close / on par with 980Ti. If that's the case it puts a £260 card close to a 1070 FE at stock which is £400. May force Nvidia to drop pricing £50-£100 on 1070, equally 1080 may drop due to the huge gap.

Agreed here. If I can get an 390 8GB for 240 now, likely £210-220 in a month, and even cheaper used, there's absolutely no motivation for me to get a 480 if it performs about the same.

Further, and not to keep harping on a point, but those prices are pound/dollar matches -- outlandish.

This is really getting annoying. None of us need to *reward* a company or buy products/services on 'principles'. Buy whatever you want to buy when you feel it provides the price/performance/features that appeal most to you. If that means wanting AMD to drive Nvidia prices down so they can buy a 1070 for less money, there is nothing wrong with that.

STOP with the guilt trip stuff for people who want to buy Nvidia. I've heard like five different condescending 'cases' for why people who buy Nvidia are dumb, being fooled by marketing, are bad for the industry, etc etc. It's hilarious in the face of all the laughable persecution complex whining from some AMD fans here not long ago.

I hope you're right, but I don't hold out much hope. Best I think people can hope for is a free game or two which they can sell on to recoup that higher cost. It's going to take a very special 480 OC'd to within an inch of its life to compete as a single card solution to the 1070 (and it wouldn't come cheap either given how 'special' it would be), but I don't even get the sense AMD are interested in this. Seems that Nvidia are likely to remain streets ahead of anything AMD are going to be coming out with until VEGA, which is only going to buoy their prices.

the issue isnt the naming, they can come up with something.
but since the naming is an issue for you here is an exemple Pro & XT versions of the chip
RX 450 & RX 460 (polaris 11) vs 1050/1040
RX 470 & RX 480 (polaris 10) vs 1060/1050ti
RX 490 & RX Rage (vega 11) vs 1070/1080
RX 495 & RX Fury (vega 10) vs Titan/ti
this way they dont have big gap in performance or price without competing option, besides i think it sounds a lot better :D

Ha! Not really an issue, I just find it interesting :D

Would be nice to see Rage again. My money is on Rage and Rage X however, can't see them reusing Fury with the bad launch, I wouldn't mind personally, though.

My main interest is Navi with its potential multiple small cores on interposers with a shared hbm2 memory pool however, I find that very interesting.

Simply adding on the price of a 730 might not be accurate. The prices of the 960 are (for 2/4GB) +192/229 for Asus, 195/215 for MSI. No way are they prices on top of a 730.

Whatever mate. As we have clearly seen recently what the lack of competition from AMD does to prices from Nvidia, it would be pure blind fanboyism which leads to a monopoly in the gpu market. Look at the 970 vs 390. People are still buying or considering the 970 even when we have the RX 480 coming in a few weeks. Mind boggling.

Those who think consumers should not look at the bigger picture once in a while deserve the price hikes like those seen recently. I personally will not support companies that take advantage of such situations and abuse pricing like this.

It is in the interests of the consumer to make informed decisions and sometimes support the underdog. If Nvidia was in danger of dying then I would be supporting them when I could. I can surely see a scenario where AMD gives up on the gpu market if market share still falls after the new gen releases.

Meh.... it's just what people do. They have a bias to whatever side they are used to.

Me? personally I don't give a crapp, i'll go with either company. It depends on who brings out the best bang for buck at the time i'm buying.

Right now it is definitely not Nvidia....
