Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

spot on. my brother in law is still using a 4970 and how many are still on a 7970/50, I like the look of the 480 and hope for amd's sake its a good seller

I'm still sitting on a 7970 but I'm looking to sell it before the RX-480 comes out. I have been rocking a 7970 since 2011 and was rocking crossfire 7970s for the last 3 years until one of them gave up the ghost a week ago and I had to throw it away.

I play games at 1440p and I am really hoping for a card that can run something like Doom at greater than 60 fps on Ultra or very very close to it since the Id Tech engine naturally doesn't support crossfire so you need to rely on a single card (similar to most Bethesda games actually).

My 7970 never had enough muscle to satisfactorily run ID Tech games at 1440p above medium settings (and frames would still dip to 40 at times). For games like the Witcher 3 I am happy with a card that can run the game on Ultra and still hold more than 30 fps as I prefer to lock it there since I like the cinematic feel in that game. However, my 7970 can only run Witcher 3 at 1440p at greater than 30 fps if the settings are medium/high.

Not sure if it's legit.

Oh and that's my first post! Hi! :P

Hmm just 32 rops? I thought it was expected to be 64 or somit like the 390 range had. At least thats what the guy in youtube vid hoped it would be, the vid where most people appreciated his predictions or somit.

Those YouTube vids could be just about anything running. If people are sad enough to fake slides etc its not exactly hard to record a game playing with a high end card then title the video "480 runs whatever".

well in the witcher settings in his video the 980 gtx is faster. so with how the 970 gtx pricing is it is as we thought if video true 970 gtx/980 gtx performance.

if its £200 for 4gb card the 970 gtx is £215 which is about right as amd normally price their cards a little lower.

stock speeds far as I can tell.....6400 certainly isn't OC and he's only running 8 gigs of ram and 1tb mech HD

That's funny because the guy that posted the Witcher 3 YouTube video said at stock it matches the 970 on 3dmark. Oh snap doesn't look like I know nothing after all!

"I did 3dmark with 6700k and it came out under GTX 980, right 970 mark"

Edit - I will take an apology in writing thanks!

this guy..
this 480 will be a great upgrade from my gtx 960,bitching about how a brand new £230 card that "may" compete with a stock 980 is meh..lol you should be a politician.

this will be a great upgrade card for a lot of us,the price makes it even sweeter, and the icing? its not NVidia :)

Whats wrong with this?

GeForce GTX 970 EVGA SC

That's £235, the same price as the reference 480.

Also that youtuber is using the older drivers I believe?

As far as I gather the specific Polaris drivers were specially given to reviewers and aren't publicly available.

a somewhat new tech under the hood drivers will always have delay before optimized for older and obviously newer games. Norm seems to be around 10% improvement over time.

Issue is, 3.5gb ram, old tech, wont age well as seen with Kepler vs amd, has big issues with async compute in dx12 titles so anyone wanting a card for 2-3 years are doing a bad buy with the 970.

The 970 is a 28nm last gen card.

*If* the 480 is the same perf and ever-so-slightly cheaper, that's a massive FAIL in my book.

AMD have had a process shrink and went on and on about the improvements they've made to their arch.

Why bother if that's not going to be reflected in better price/perf?

You can make all the improvements to the arch in the world - what matters to CUSTOMERS is price/perf. We don't care if you can use 1/4 the transistors to get the same speed. If you are just going to match last gen's price/perf you might as well NOT HAVE BOTHERED.

Everyone should agree with this - but there are so many nVidia haters that they will say AMD have done a great job - matching a last gen card. Wooot!
