I'm not sure why the following wasn't drilled in by the remain camp, the leave win was all about immigration, and basically to keep free trade we will have to keep movement of the people. Can anyone comment on how likely it is for the non movement option to go through?

There is a caveat in the Norwegian model. They contribute 50% less and have the ability to restrict free movement. Liechenstein have permanently restricted free movement like this. We already had the ability to stop free movement to the Channel Islands which was in place. It is completely reasonable to implement a restricted movement model to some degree now we are able to return to the negotiating table and get this.

Just under half the population who voted do not think it is quite so clear; however, we are where we are, and I really really hope that whoever leads the negotiations does a good job. They have a massive task on their hands, and I hope for all our sake that we've not just made a very big mistake.

My heart says it is a mistake. I won't be surprised if we fall into heavy recession, suffer heavy unemployment, see the NHS brought even further to its knees, and immigration to still be mishandled by our dear leaders. I'm also expecting the Tories to have a field day deconstructing all of the EU laws that offered workers much greater protection, increased consumer rights, etc etc.

Let's not also forget that this now has a extremely high chance of being the catalyst for the break up of the UK.

We're now in a situation where we've undone 40 years of progress, staring into the abyss. I do not have faith in our own government to guide us away from that. I honestly hope I'm completely wrong.

Couldn't agree more. Very eloquently put.

Either that or remain are now ascribing every leave vote to racism, bigotry, screw the establishment etc.

Maybe people voted because they thought the UK would be better off outside of the EU......
If you honestly believe that xenophobia played no part in the Leave vote winning out, I dont know what to say.

Lets be honest I didn't just vote leave due to immigration, because we can't stop it fully. But how many bail-outs we have to help with. And now with the possibility of the Turkish also joining I expect more bail-outs in the future which *IF* we were part of the EU have to honor the money.

Would you really want to be part of the EU with propaganda around Syria, Turks and the Rebels talk about putting your head in the sand.

Some of the posts in here are very childish.

I voted leave, in hindsight i do sort of wish i voted remain.

The main reason for this change was this morning when i heard the news and when my 8 month old daughter woke up and started smiling and laughing at me. It was only then i realised i probably voted for my own selfish reasons instead of thinking about her too and the future she will have.

Will it actually be better or would the status quo have been better for her?? I have no idea, along with every single person that voted.

I just hope my vote hasn't ruined her future, and that isn't being a coward, it's a feeling of being asked to vote on something i simply don't have the expertise to realistically choose between.

We should never have been given this vote off the back of a major crash just a few years ago.

Just hoping for the best for all in the UK now.

People are accepting that the result is leave but they are free to express their concerns and fears.

Stop treating this like a football result and be a bit more mindful that the other people on this forum will have businesses, family and economic investments that will be affected by this. There has even been a poster on this thread already saying that their company has announced their intention to move on a leave result.

It is one thing to argue a point but another to tell people to stop crying and move on when they are just expressing their concerns for the future. If you dont want to read the concerns over the result of the referendum, why are you here?

This is not an i told you so thread.

Well said.

The FT's thoughts on the result:

I feel very lucky that I had the privilege to work all over Europe in my 20s and early 30s. It made me a better person, with a broader perspective on life. It's a shame that a new generation won't have the same level of opportunity. Britain will be poorer for it.

Couldn't agree more. But then large proportions of exit voters are not interested in experiencing other cultures, or having a broader perspective on life.

So people voted leave because they were fed up with the Tories even though it's going to result in maximum Tory?

Cameron is going to look like a socialist in comparison to who comes next!!

No only complete morons would have protest voted in this situation. Oh wait.... maybe they did

I've just listed three undemocratic institutions the UK has 'at home', each one consisting of unelected officials with more power than EU bureaucrats.

What was your point again?

Democracy in Britain? The only Western country without two elected chambers. Only Britain and Iran have reserved seats for the clergy in one of those Chambers. Only Britain has seats reserved for the descendants of feudal rulers. Democracy? Britain should start at home.
