Brexit thread - what happens next

Watching PMQ and everybody saying they want access to the single market. That will entail free movement of people and all the other things we currently have. The turmoil in the markets with its on going costs to industry due to the weak pound for the next whatever to be in a position that is very similar to the one we now occupy. What is the point?

dat sweet sovereignty though, has to make it worthwhile. Because sovereignty will keep my lights on, will fill my cupboards with food for my kids and will no doubt keep my house warm in is comforting glow...............

Cameron speaks with conviction on this. Clear most MPs still can't quite grasp the reality of the decision. Doesn't sound like this going to be reversed. The UK will leave the EU step by step until the process is completed. Wheels are already very slowly starting to turn.

He speaks with conviction that he will continue to 'prepare' government for the negotiations that need to take place when he's gone. But he did say that the decision to carry out these negotiations or do something else is the choice of the new government.

Another report of the 'casual racism' that is emerging

In Boston (surprise surprise) one of the Polish workers in my friends business was walking down the road talking Polish on the phone and he has been set upon and beaten up whilst being told to go home....

Yes it has been reported to the police, who told him he should stay indoors at this difficult time

did not happen, all a lie.

;)

Not sure whether this has been mentioned already but the 1922 Committee have said the new Tory leader must be in place by 2nd September. Which is a notably shorter timetable than Cameron was talking about, and likely favours Boris for three reasons: (1) he's already got his campaign team ready, (2) it favours candidates who are very well known, and (3) the GDP figures confirming we're in recession due to Brexit won't be out yet.

very clever flip flopping by Cameron, extremely well played.

I remain convinced that he's clearly the best choice of PM. Its such a shame that he's departing.

Bob Neill - 'is article 50 the only way to leave EU?'
DC - 'yes, that's the only legal way to exit'

He didn't say that this was the only outcome.

He's too good.

The details/timing/negotiations of leaving the EU will lie with the new government. That's how I read the situation.
That's how you read it, but not what was said :)

Not must, it's a suggestion.

In my perception both are true, but let's leave aside the Labour comment for now - if there's a Brexit plan where is it? Where are those that own it?

Somewhere in the cabinet office I expect. For reasons that I hope are obvious they aren't going to publish it until a new government is in place. We saw part of it enacted today, which was to set up a new unit inside Whitehall to manage Brexit.

Cameron must be looking forward to GTFO and enjoying a cushy life doing a few public speaking gigs and maybe having a couple of ambassadorial roles.

nothing is turning until the UK formally give notice to the EU/EC of their intent to withdraw. No negotiations can open and no deals can be struck until Article 50 is invoked.

Actually, he's just said the decision will lie with the new government.

If that is what he said, that implies to me that we will have a general election before A50 procedure starts and after a new Conservative leader has been elected.

So, general election in October?;)

Didn't hear a reference to the "or do something else" bit. All just talk of implementation details.

If there was one I'm convinced there'd be some confidence from those that own and developed it.

Potentially, though he could have simply been referring to one without him in it :)

considering the "uniqueness" of this situation that could very well happen.

didn't he say that on Friday in his resignation speech.
new tory leader elected > GE > article 50

and how does he plan for brexit with the EU / EC while at the same time trying to negotiate a better deal to stay. It's simply not possible and would in no way have been entertained by any of the EU member states.

Cameron cut his cloth accordingly, he was spearheading the remain campaign and thus his plans were around ensuring the best UK position possible within the EU moving forward.

This isn't like drawing up a plan for my holiday where if the flight is cancelled I have a plan B to go to bognor regis.

Military planners plan for all eventualities. If the MOD can do it then No.10 have no excuse.

"As all eyes were on the British referendum tonight members of the European Parliament quietly announced a new travel document allowing migrants from outside the EU to travel within the 28 member states."

"Mike Hookem MEP said "How convenient that they chose this evening, with polls now closed, to discuss a proposal to make it even easier for migrants to get into the EU."

Phew.. :D
