Welp, there goes the last Brexiteer. No chance of a proper EU exit now. We'll be stuck in the EEA and May will refuse to negotiate further.

1984 here we come!... At least the pound is up a bit.

Out of interest, who did people think would be the PM?

It seemed like everyone was in agreeance that he would not see the year out regardless of whether he won or not. so who would you have said got the job if they asked you the question prior to the result.

So there should be a GE every time we need a new PM?

Yes...

If we had a General Election every time the PM changed then the prospective PM would need to put together a manifesto outlining what Britain would look like under their leadership. The public would get a chance to vote on whether or not they like that picture.

Without an election, should the new leader respect the old manifesto? Or should they have carte blanche to do whatever they like? I can't say I'm keen on either of those options.

TBH if it wasn't for Brexit polarising public opinion, I expect May would call an election. Labour aren't in any position to compete.

There's a legal challenge calling for a judicial review been logged and is being heard on the 19th July. I'm not sure what bearing (if any) it will have on A50 being triggered.

The Tory 1922 committee has said that the candidate list will not be reopened and that May's confirmation will likely be accelerated but no time frame given.

The manifesto is for the party, not the leader of the party as far as i am aware.

This is a very good result as it does not alienate large parts of the parliamentary party and most if not all conservatives will support Theresa May who is a very competent politician and minister.

It is also time for another woman to lead the party IMO. :)

If I were a Tory member, I'd be fuming at not being given a choice in the matter. I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories but it does all smell like a stitch-up.

I like most others I'm guessing assumed it would be Boris which ever way we voted. I thought following a leave vote he's use Dave as a glove puppet for a bit to take the flack for everything that didn't turn out like described in the leave campaign then him and weasel boy Grove would sit next to each other on the front bench like the naughty kids at school sneaking into the staff room! If we lost I assumed he would get in before the next election as he had fought a 'brave' battle and lost honourably.

Proves how much I know and maybe how much Boris knew as well!

Boris, with Gove as chancellor. Would have been fine with that.

Gove mucked that all up though, and ruined his career in the process. Whey-Hey!...

May won her seat in Westminster via the ballot, Junker did not win a ballot in fact he in effect lost a ballot. This is an important distinction.

True, but May should really organise an early GE. Doesn't have to be this year, but 2020 is too long for a PM the public didn't directly vote for.

The thing is, we technically don't directly vote for a PM, despite all the personality politics that seem to be prevalent, these days. You're voting for your constituency's MP. :)

But the public never directly vote for a PM so your argument is illogical.

I actually think it may be a good idea for her personally to do so, because it will crush Labour and give May an undeniable mandate. On the other hand, the last thing the country needs now is more uncertainty. A strong hand at the tiller until Brexit is complete is what we need.

Labour will be desperate for a GE so they can be done with Corbyn.

In theory they dont I agree, but arguably in practice the public voted for Cameron in a lot of places in 2015 because he was viewed as a popular leader.

The Conservatives won 36.9% of the popular vote at the last general election. Nowhere near a majority, even out of those that voted.

However, this translated to a clear majority of seats under FPTP.

So which party won more votes than the Conservatives and why aren't they leading the country?
