Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Like the look of the Devil 480X, but is it not a little concerning for those buying why the clocks are TBA (same as other makes using custom PCB/coolers)? I mean is it because they don't reliably clock much better than the reference or what?

it doesnt really matter what out of the box clock it has, even if it's reference clock, it all depands on the silicon lottery, if lucky you get a good OC to push around 1500mhz or more, if unlucky you get one you can barely squeeze to 1400mhz.
but with time we will see how far ppl can push the clock.

my 290x get a massive 40% boost in doom with Vulkan. The 480s get even more.

My 290x is only 6% slower than a stock 1070 in 4k doom now :D

LOL...

Would be hilarious if they cant actually get any meaningful gains in Vulkhan for Nvidia users, would be a bit sad for Nvidia users, but hilarious none the less...

Doesn't seem to do anything for my ti's in vulkan so far, that being said i would have though sli and crossfire would finally be supported.

Yeah with 480s beating 1070s in doom, if Vulkan got more support, nobody sensible would buy a 1070 over a 480 nevermind a 1060.

Would be good to have competition back again as Nvidia would have to slash their prices.

I think they will be able to leverage better fps out of the Pascal cards in Vulkhan, its probably going to be more software sided than hardware like in an AMD card..

I am wondering though if the landscape will change drastically however, as AMD seemed to have played the long game with their hardware, slowly gaining traction and moment with lower level API's able to extract the power, its been a long time coming, but we could be at the turning point now, where games are starting to show just how capable AMD hardware is, and infact how much better it will be when compared to Nvidias brute force approach..

If ifs true that AMD's hardware is just better suited to stuff like Vulkan and DX12, then Nvidia will need to address that in their hardware or fall behind.

I predict this generation of cards will be a win for AMD however, the 480 is selling well, i dont think the 1060 is going to be significantly better either, and with more and more adoption to these API's the gap is going to widen at that end of the market..

Then when Vega comes, i think we may see it actually compete with the Pascal stuff at the top end, add in its natural support for these API's and it could be a landslide victory for AMD.

This is all pure speculation on my part, but i feel AMD for a long time with the GCN architecture were working towards this, coupled with Mantle which seemed to be the seed for DX12 / Vulkan, and their hardware being in this gen and next gen consoles, i think we may see the landscape shift in their favour.

Lots of people are going to disagree with this, but seriously, stuff like whats happening now with Doom and Vulkan is only going to excite other Devs, DX12 also is gaining more traction, as much as people say its not going to work or its going to fail, you see 1 event like this Doom vulkan patch and suddenly everyones excited and eager to see it implented in other titles.

290X appears to have been well ahead of its time, hardware-wise. Still a solid card, though VRAM may start to become an issue.

We sold a lot of 8GB 290X remember with our worldwide exclusive. ;)

Then 390 and 390X are 8G so those GPUs are very future proof.

Good news for AMD cards.

Does seem the main difference that AMD have the ASYNC on a hardware level rather than software. So perhaps in a sense is it a matter of increasing efficiency and working better rather than using more power/brute force through software alternative.

I remembered this interview from a while back, the guy talks about Vulkan/DX12.

Interesting read an undervolted Nano and a down clocked 8320 running at 1.8ghz got a 42% increase from openGl to Vulkan

That screams Mantle to me!

The beauty of Mantle was the requirement for a powerful CPU at 1080P or higher was essentially removed and this is why the consoles did quite well for their relatively low specification because of course the console had AMD hardware and AMD/MS had a lot of Mantle implementation in their OS.

So it is great a powerful CPU is not required but unlike Mantle the Vulkan seems to be giving great boost even in high resolutions due to taking advantage of AMD's GCN and A-Sync compute.

Mmm really excited to see what those two cards perform like with the slight performance hike from the drivers and a 10-15% clock increase it looks like a really good card.
