I don't think there is an obvious solution to the problems of radical Islam (well if people stopped being religious and the whole world lived in liberal democracies then that might well be a good start but it isn't going to happen any time soon).

Certainly some reform is needed within Islam in general in order for it to become a bit more tolerant in general - part of the battle is simply Muslims actually acknowledging that there even is an issue. For example a gay Muslim is likely to face serious issues from even so called 'moderate' Muslims.

Bit silly to turn it into a theological discussion. The reality is that people have different interpretations of Islam, if you're completely unaware that there are sections of the Quoran that Islamists use to justify violence then the other poster can provide you with some commonly cited passages... I'm sure you can then explain that they mean something different because of [reasons]... It is all a bit pointless if you're happy to acknowledge that other Muslims have a different interpretation.

If on the other hand you're adamant that your interpretation of Islam is the only correct one then it is also rather futile.

IS proclaim to be all things islamic, heck, even their name 'Islamic state in the...' States this.
By aligning with them you are firstly showing you accept them. By accepting them you are showing you believe the represent an Islamic state and all things Islamic that came with that. It's simple validation. They believe everyone should be a Muslim so secondly, by accepting them, you are accepting everyone (including yourself) should be a Muslim.
Thirdly, he went on a mass murder rampage in their name, the name of Islamic state! If that doesn't show he's a follower and therefore a Muslim I can't actually see what does!

Also I beleive that the terrorist will justify killing other members of the faith in the belief that they will go to heaven with 72 virgins the same as them, whereas the infidels will go straight to hell.
