What film did you watch last night?

You liked it ?

Yes, though perhaps more for the style than the substance. That being said I did like the fact that no one noticed the descent into chaos. Most of these stories have at least one character who's there going "Hang on a minute..." but there was no one here. They all just went with it like it was totally normal.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV 6/10

Since I know jack about FF lore I suppose I was at a bit of a disadvantage.

As each numbered FF game is stand alone with their lore and story, you are at no disadvantage watching Kingsglaive. If you didn't know why they were at war then that's just poor story telling. Though i'm sure in the 15min trailer it tells you how the war started? Will have to rewatch it again.

I thought it was pretentious twaddle.

Nicely shot and set design but the film itself was ludicrously awful on every level....

Jason Bourne - 6/10

It was fine, I will even say a couple of the action scenes were exceptionally well done. All the acting was fine but it was all just unecessary and tagged on to the original Bourne trilogy. At least Legacy did try something completely different ie making the whole film essentially about a drug addict trying to get his fix but it tried. This wanted to keep hooked on to the original trilogy and play it safe.

I think the only way the next Bourne if there is one will be a box office hit is if they bring Damon and Renner together, I like Renner, i'd watch that but I now doubt the ability to string it forward especially as Damon had held off for so long due to Greengrass and a decent story, and this was it.

Solaris - sci-fi with George Clooney trying to make you think a bit about life and all that. It was OK, not the best and probably I should have watched the Russian original. Natascha McElhone does have amazing eyes though. 3/5

The Purge Election Year.

The first hour was good, good tension, interesting mix of characters and set pieces but the 3rd Act was a bit predictable and let it down a bit.

6/10

War Dogs

Enjoyable, not that funny as it advertised to be, it is actually quite serious at times. It's interesting and good acting by the 2 leads but the wife stole the show for me, she's so pretty and that accent...hmmmmmm

The Neon Demon

What can I say, what's weird movie, reminds me of Muholland Drive in a way. It is beautifully shot, brilliant sound track, terrific editing and good acting. And speaking about acting, that scene though......and then that 3rd Act, it took a weird turn although there were hints from earlier that it might happen, sorry being a bit vague but I think this movie needs to be seen. It is not amazing but I am still thinking about it 24 hours later. So many memorable scenes. From the audition to the gold paint shoot, to the scenes with Keanu Reeves, to the last scene. This movie is more than a movie, it's almost like Art.

8/10.

Its one I really enjoyed watching .... but its not an easy one to re-watch I think. Do not expect anything remotely like Drive, it is more like Only God Forgives but with a much tighter script. Nicolas Winding Refn was channeling a lot of Kubrick with the long scenes.

Batman v Superman

8.5/10

Not sure why people give this movie and Man of Steel so much flack. I thought it was great and a nice complement to the Marvel movies. Both sets of movies have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Captain America: Civil War

Marvels best effort since 'The Winter Soldier'. After a rather disappointing entry in 'Age of Ultron' which felt quite emotionally flaccid, 'Civil War' just hit all the right notes for me. Thought the character drama was superb and the plot was more then serviceable for the telling. The lack of a big bad was a real nice change that let the central characters breathe.

I liked Sicario and No Country of Old men is superb.

Watched Sicario last night. Was alright I guess. Was expecting something far more gritty and dark. 6.5/10

No Country would be a solid 8+/10

Also watched:-

Midnight Special. Have a lot of time for Michael Shannon. Nice indie style movie. 6/10

Cap Am - Civil War. Not bad. Just another comic book film but not bad. 6/10

Ant-Man - as he was in the above and I've had the film for a while, decided to watch it. A more interesting hero for the genre. Enjoyed it more than civil war as it goes. 7/10

I dunno. Whilst people have issues with the Marvel flicks, most would admit there reasonably consistent and know how to tell a good story.

BvS is just a BAD movie, in the sense (and I hate to be 'that guy') that it's just so poorly structured with little to no character of it's own. It's worse then bland storytelling. It's inept.

Man Of Steel get's off a little easier because it has some semblance of a 'point' to it and is reasonably well put together.

I think sooner or later (perhaps even now) Hollywood is going to realise that Mr Snyder can't direct. Or rather, he can when he's partnered up, just not when he's flying solo.

Captain America Civil War- 8/10

I thought it was very good. Better than Age of Ultron. Antman and Black Panther were the standouts for me. Spiderman was good too, but a little annoying.

One small thing I didn't like, and never do in films is when they put the name of the location on screen in big letters and this does it way too much, and it was always useless as well...Why did I need to know that one scene took place in Cleveland for example, it could have been anywhere. I also rolled my eyes at the bit with Tony Stark at the beginning where the woman tells him about her son:...So Tony didn't care about the innocent people that died until he found out one of them was American. Now The Avengers must be controlled!

Senna (2010)

7/10

sad and inexplicable but good footage from all the parties at that time. I think it was all because of active suspension personally, the cars should have been taken from 1992 season as a penalty and for safety

Morgan (2016) - 6/10

An interesting action thriller that has a strong creepy vibe thanks to the weird family arrangement and the tension between them and the outsiders.

The twist ending is very underwhelming and predictable and the film relies more on action than mystery, but it is still a well put together film with some thoughts about creating life through genetics.

Black and white night
12 angry men (1957 version), this is really very good 9/12
especially good as set in a single room and just dialogue.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
also pretty good, pretty funny 8/10
