So after speaking to a few guys at work about Fifa and watching a couple of YouTubers mentioning custom tactics , I went googling and found this on Reddit.
Go into custom tactics and choose the below settings , only thing I didn't like was free form so I changed that back. Essentially it makes your defence better and mid's more happy to intercept worked awesomely for me. If you give it go let me know how you get on
Going to try this when I get home. Where the custom tactics in previous games? I did find it odd that calling on a team mate done nothing.

Press triangle when you go to Squads and the one you've chosen then custom tactics.

I'm using Sterling out there and he is just absolutely rapido.
Team is doing well but I've been playing in the Cup with much easier opponents rather than slogging away in Seasons which just got painful.

I've lost my last 3 finals in the qualifying cup thing
My teams don't qualify
Last week I got to 3 finals and lost them both 
it will be the in form card
5 as well! I'm not sure it's even sweaty, I'm just not very good, can't hold onto the ball, don't create any chances and can't score.
On the plus side, Otamendi and Koscielny feel a very good partnership and Walker is class because he's just ridonculously quick.

Anyway here's my teams, I'm the opposite Stewy cup games today lost 3 times in opening round
However I have managed 4 wins and a draw in Div 5 Thinking about going 433 (2) the one with a CDM in it to try and stop the annoying counterattacks.
I still think the game suits a CAM so I like 433(4), even though it's quite open at the back.
Is Lewan not millions of coins this year? Is he good?
Is Kante any good? I was umming and arring about him but he's quite expensive and I went for Fernandinho instead who is pretty decent.

Gone back to 4411 and seem to be doing okay with it destroys 433(4) as you can control the midfield and the same to 41212 but that formation is dead this year, just had a game where everything felt sped up it was like ping pong ball just bouncing everywhere talping pass and they flew across the pitch.

Kante is great as is lewan , Vidal is the best mid I've used so far though. Kante is fine but don't shoot with him or expect him to win any headers!
I agree with the CAM comment I think 433 is the one for me but the counter attack is so bloody annoying!

I've found telling your full backs to stay back helps a lot.
One thing that drives me absolutely insane is that, regardless of score or game time, EA have decided that you only ever want to leave 2 people back when you have a corner. It's unbelievably annoying, particularly considering headers are a laughable lottery where tiny strikers and CAMs seem to win about 70% of the balls that get hoofed up even against giant defenders.
