Astronomers may have found Aliens

The debris disc from a black hole seems like the more credible theory - quite a range of potential theories for that which don't all require the disc to be bigger than anything we've seen before.

Plot twist... the debris is circling around a black hole resulting from the collapse of a star caused by an advanced alien civilisation attempting to build a Dyson Sphere too close to it.

Anyone interested in this it's on the discovery channel just search Nasa's unexplained files it aired last Monday and is on catch up actually found it quite interesting.

Interesting and if its a true report i imagine seti will be giving this particular star its full attention. [..]

They are:

On the basis of historical precedent, it’s most likely that the the dimming of KIC 8462852 is due to natural causes. But in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, any suggestive clues should, of course, be further investigated – and that is what the SETI Institute is now doing.

Sounds sensible to me. Ignorance of the cause doesn't automatically mean the cause is artificial. Gods or aliens serve the same purpose in this context. Don't know what causes lightning? It's a god. Don't know what causes a star to appear to dim? It's aliens. Same way of thinking, different cultures.

The research described in that article from SETI is now complete. They found nothing. That doesn't rule out the cause being artificial. It's possible that a hypothetical alien civilisation with technology much more advanced than ours would have technology that doesn't create emissions we could detect at this distance. More efficient technology generally tends to less detectable at a distance.

It's probably natural. But maybe not.

This star is having another do again.

Dimming event has started again. How low will it go.

The pattern does kind of suggest an intermittent but massive cloud of gas or something, with varied patches from thin to dense, moving across between us and the star somewhere... but you'd think we'd see that more often (with other stars) if it was the case (and more irregularity at times when it is dimmer).

I think concrete proof of other life in the universe would really do the planet a favour. The crazies would have to accept that we're not "special" and hopefully that would put paid to a lot of religious nonsense. Humanity might actually begin to advance in the right direction.

I loved Ringworld so the possibility of a Niven Ring or a Dyson Sphere or Swarm is awesome. :D

Have you watched Contact? The religious nuts would go crazy. It'd be an absolute disaster.

Edit: Oh ffs, this thread is well old :p
