Is a 980ti really not going to cut it for 1440p anymore?

For modern games at max or near max settings (whatever the **** that means)...

x1 980Ti at 2560x1440 at 60hz = v v good good

x1 980Ti at 2560x1440 at 100Hz+ = goodish

x1 980Ti at 3440x1440 at 60Hz= goodish

x1 980Ti at 3440x1440 at 100Hz+ = starting to struggle. i.e. No.

x2 980Ti at 3440x1440 at 100Hz = lovely stuff (wot i got got). Although not all games will be able to hit 100Fps, at max settings. You can obviously take that everything under this with x2 980Ti is also very lovely stuff.

It all depends how fast a refresh rate your monitor supports... people say things like...

"A 980ti is a beast at 1440p and will last you for years to come", and Im sure its just fine on a 60hz 2560 x 1440 monitor, but it wont push high refresh monitors near or into the 100's, not on modern titles!

did just fine with a 970 on a rog swift 1440p 144hz monitor. I am sure the 980ti will be more than fine on that as well ... :)

Nope 980Ti is obsolete now. I can already feel the performance dropping off. Either that or game ports just generally are getting worse.

Strange comment

I've been using it well over a year and can't say I've had any issues. BF3, BF4, BF1, Division and a few other games have performed perfectly without any issues. The biggest cause of performance issue with cards is drivers and bugged games. 980Ti has a lot of life left in it!

I've been wondering this too,I've been getting drops to 30 fps at times in bf1 running 1440p asus rog 34" g sync. Could this be cpu bottleneck?

Is SLI a wise choice these days? I used to back when I had 2 8800 GTX's under water. It was amazing.

I'm using a micro build, so small ATX case, it would get fairly warm in there. Mind you, I'm only using Noctuas that don't really have much pushing power.

I also had SLI 8800s under water and if you thought they were amazing then 980ti sli will blow your socks off, its improved a lot since then.

It's never been good enough if you're talking max settings and 60fps in everything.

Is lowering a couple settings really that problematic?

+1

I turn of things like Depth of Field/Motion Blur off, maybe lower AA and I game fine with a 1070 at 2160p. 1440p should not be a problem, just tweak settings, you will be surprised that there is little difference in IQ yet you get the extra fps :)

Using 2x with an Acer X34, have been for over a year now, and tbh, can't see it changing in the next year either as nothing troubles it at "present", not counting some of the horrible ports/releases lately.

my 980ti sli smashes games with gsync, always above 60fps and i really max the settings above ultra. Could lower them to utilize 144hz.

Anyone having problems with a 980ti at 1440p needs to check their system is setup right, it really is that simple, a 980ti is basically as fast as a stock 1070 and faster when overclocked and on the heels of a stock 1080 when overclocked and faster in some games if you can get to 1500mhz+ on the core. I'm on 3440x1440 and not having a single issue with one 980ti that self boosts to 1450mhz out of the box and can do 1580mhz overclocked on air.

Not sure why suddenly the 980ti is taking a bashing by some again when in reality there is hardly any difference between it and a 1070 stock. I think I'm keeping mine till the next generation unless the 1080ti is a good price and shows a good boost, but my gut feeling is telling me not to invest in Pascal and wait and not feed Nvidia this generation for what I personally think is a terrible generation that is way overpriced for what you get.

because it fits the agenda of quite a few people ... statements like NVidia cards are gimped after a while, NVidia stops support, drivers stop supporting older cards bla bla. Oh look, the worst port ever of a game from console to PC doesn#t run stellar on ...... insert NVidia card here ...

The fact is 980 TI is a great card and will continue to be a great card for years to come. Sorry if it breaks a few bubbles :)

dont upset the 980ti loyalists now mikuru! they seems strangely attached to them

Loyalists ?, are you being special for the sake of it, the card still performs fine at the resolution that's been discussed, are you upset you made the jump for a minor upgrade ?

i went from a 690, so no.

but i was never so fervently defending my older gpu. if it did what i wanted it to, i kept it. had that gpu for 4 years.

gains from upgrading from the best card from two generations was always reasonably small.

and ill let you in on a little secret, i was being a bit special on purpose, as its sometimes quite amusing.

The the OP, by that logic if the 980 Ti is obsolete then the only worthwhile card on the market is the 1080, which is a ridiculous notion. Many games just aren't well optimised. Deus Ex Mankind Divided for example, it doesn't look good enough to justify the flaky performance. And why get a PS4 when tuning the settings slightly will leave you with better IQ and resolution than any current console is capable of?
