Audi owners in here!

Mine kicked up a "transmission malfunction" error message tonight whilst shifting from 2nd to 3rd (1500 miles 4 months old). Was literally in the middle of nowhere, car switched itself from Sport to Manual and locked me into 2nd (couldn't manually shift up or down, neither would it auto-shift).

Limped to a lay-by and turned the ignition off and on, message gone, car seems ok.

Obviously I'll take it to Audi asap, but anyone got and insight? There was an almighty clunk when the error came up (and I was under some pretty hard acceleration).

I had this with a MK7 Golf R DSG and it needed a new gearbox.

I'd say the transmission has malfunctioned.

1500 miles in 4 months isn't much. I wouldn't be very happy.

Quite. Obviously it'll be going in for a check-over asap, I was only really posting to see if anyone else had ever seen this message on an S Tronic/DSG equipped car.

As I say, the transmission feels/seems fine after essentially a reboot. Fingers crossed it was a one-off sensor problem or similar, rather than needing a new transmission, don't really fancy the car being pulled apart this early on in it's life!

according to my service book mine had gearbox work done 8k miles in! either way you're covered, should be an open and shut case really.

I had the gearbox malfunction message come up on my A4 just as I was leaving for Suffolk on the 23rd december and I couldn't select any gears. Turning the car off then on again cleared it and the car performed fine over the holiday however when we returned home a few days later it happened again, however this time I had to stop and start the engine several times before I could move the car onto our driveway, but that was it and the message refused to go and there was no way I could select any gears and the car was stuck in park.
As the car was only two months old, and had only done 1300 miles, I called out the Audi technician who arrived a few hours later and he found a fault code relating to the park mechanism but the only way we could disengage park was to use the tool through the top of the gearbox and still no gears could be selected.
The next day the car was taken off on the back of a recovery truck and the Audi dealership identified that the park solenoid had failed and that was replaced without removing the gearbox.
Since then the car has been fine but I must admit everytime I start the car I am expecting the message to come up again.

That's not the point, I was making an "apples for apples" comparison, for sure you'll haggle a better price on the A3, same as you would on the V40 etc Sadly not on the Focus RS as they are list price only or possibly more if you want to jump the queue and get one already delivered.

Try comparing it to an S3. I've noticed it always looks better value compared to a top range/loaded with options A3. Plus the S3 will get certain things (e.g. nicer seats) as standard rather than options like on the A3. The residual value on the S3 will be better over time compared to a normal A3.

That said, surely anyone even remotely interested in a Focus RS would focus there attention towards a S3 / RS3 not a A3 model.

You misunderstood, for the same money as the RS it only achieved an S Line... an S3 comes to 40k once you get similar spec. Just comparing list prices....for sue you may haggle it down. That wont get you a car anywhere near the same capability or fun. Depreciate on the S3 will likely be much higher.
We have upgraded sports seats in our A3, having just done a 3 hour round trip today they were pretty uncomfortable compared to my RS... it also understeers and wallows around... couldn't actually wait to get out of it... So hopefully the S Line suspension I collected today will sharpen up the ride and handling.

Why are you trying to compare a diesel rep car to an RS focus?

Sports suspension on a Audi A3 is hardly the softest compared to, say, a Ford Focus. I can only imagine that the sline suspension will shake out your teeth..

I had an A5 whilst my R8 was in for a service, one of those with 4 doors and I must say though it rode OK which surprised me, the rest of the car was very forgettable and to my mind no competition for a 3/4 series. It was a 2L diesel and I think based on my driving experience it had about 12bhp as no custard skin was pulled off anywhere. The interior was bad, I think it was the old model with lots of cheap looking silver finishes and the internals switchgear was not what I would expect from Audi. I had a new A4 previously and that was a much better car, but I can't see why these A5's are popular as I thought it incredibly bland, even by motorway mile eating standards.

This interior.

Am I allowed not to like it ?
Popular due to people being impressed by chrome edging and badge snobbery? (Yes we have just bought an A3, an itch the wife wanted to scratch)

Audi have for years made fabulous interiors, but they went through a 10 year period where they all went to ****. I think they are getting back on track again having seen some of the new ones, but the one I had was nasty cheap plastic looking and feeling. Also it has the worst standard hifi I have come across for a long time, my Polo kills it for example as does the one in my wife's 7 year old MX5! You are free to like or dislike anything, I have never been a fanboy, it doesnt hurt me at all when people **** off or detest stuff I like...or in this case dislike and like more but still not love.
