IGN review of the hardware is pretty scathing.

They were expecting the whole device to fit in your pocket, be as powerful as an X1, have full sized controls, dock horizontally, have a battery life of six hours and have an optical out/ethernet port on board.

Some legitimate gripes but a lot of unrealistic expectations IMO.

It seems the actual reviews coming out are criticising things that they weren't bothered about when they posted previews etc. Why did they not pick up on any of these problems when they were gagging about how great it was at the conferences etc...

Pockets are for wallet, phone and keys only :p. I am fine with the size, whenever I'd actually need it, e.g. train, I'd have an actual bag with me anyway. Any long journey too for me is a combo of Switch and iPad so not so bothered about battery life either. Plus again, long journey = bag and portable power pack. Even then, usually plugs around on a train or plane (USB).

Admittedly it won't fit well in to many entertainment stands/units and the controllers signal strength is a concern.

For me the size is probably about right to provide a decent sized screen with a good IQ and usable controls. It's no more or less portable than a small laptop or tablet and how necessary is the to have those devices fit in your pocket?

Battery life is exactly what I expected from the device. If you squeeze three hours out of it whilst playing Zelda I'd actually say that's very good.

I don't know where the wild expectations come from in regards to a device that is essentially a handheld gaming device which easily connects to your TV?

Who cares about what they say anyway. Not used that site in years... I bet if Nintendo paid them they would have had a different story. lol

Come on now guys, take the negatives with the positives. IGN have legitimate gripes, Polygon also had similar ones.

I used to have a massive issue with battery life but ive warmed to it a little bit now, not happy about having to play in low light etc to get 3 hours though tbh. Its almost a bad thing that Zelda has come out so soon...not for the game of course as it will be a massive hit but im sure its taxing that system as much as it can which kinda show its weaknesses with battery etc.

If that makes sense, it does to me lol.

I can take the negatives, however some of them were already known. Nintendo did already state 2.5-3 hours battery for Zelda, we've known this since January.

Again, a few of the little quirks were obvious to anyone looking, such as a small kickstand. People using terms like 'Hidden costs' to buy a pad is ridiculous (Kotaku), every pad costs money!

I accept the console is underpowered compared to my PS4 and XB1, I'd be stupid to think otherwise, as the battery would need to be massive to sustain the device. My hope in this regard would be a 'pro' dock with a GPU integrated. Again, a compromise I'm willing to make for higher graphical fidelity, just a PS4 pro users have paid more for 4K textures and better frame rates at 1080p.

The real concern is the joy cons cutting out, however digital foundry have found is most living room environments, the issue is minimal / none. Again confirming that media outlets like to make mountains out of molehills (remember the PS4 launch issue with the HDMI). However, I will be wary when using them in 2 player games

I see this console as a replacement to my 3DS and a nice addition to my collection of devices for gaming. It'll give me access to games I cannot get on my other machines as well as the option for taking games I'd normally play at home on the go.

Whether something was known since Jan doesnt mean they cant have an issue with it though and the controllers de syncing is just poor.

Sure it does but consoles usually come with a Dpad in fairness....and a replacement isnt £50

Digital Foundry's review is comprehensive, realistic and entirely fair. Great review of the hardware and puts me at ease regarding the controller's signal issues.

Tesco need to get in gear and send mine out already!

But again, you know what you are buying from the outset, it's really not hidden. I would have been more concerned if nintendo claimed 4 hour life and it came up as it is. I find it hard to believe that people want something with extra power (XB1 - PS4), but longer battery and the cost low. It really cannot happen.

By design the joycons cannot support a normal dpad because the concept was to take the console somewhere and use both as pads.

The joy con desyncing is a concern, however it IS comforting to see media outlets like digital foundry doing more concise tests to determine the drop outs and they are (personally for me) acceptable because my rooms are not larger than 5m.

The console is a machine of compromises, it won't be the fastest, or have the longest battery. The internal memory is small to keep costs low (and demand fair, as if they tiered models people would always want the biggest) but means we most likely will need to buy physical or by an SD at some point. With launch titles so slim, I know I don;t need to pony up if I want one immediately, just like upgrading the 500gb drive on my PS4, which hardly held any games due to their size.

My biggest concern will be the titles that nintendo can get out on this. AAA third party games are not my thing, however I apprieciate the need for something to keep the system popular. I hope most for good VC and first party games, as my pc covers most of my AAA gaming (the few games I do play)
