What have you done to your car today?

My cheap bit of coiled flex turned up to wire up the heated rear window on the MX5. Complete internet purchase fail as I am now the owner of 2.5M of super thick 13A coiled flex :o Found a second hand loom on ebay though so have that on the way instead :p

Took it down to Nobles to see what power it is making up to yet:

It made 322BHP and 313lbft of torque.

PS, if you have decent speakers, turn them down :D

At work I keep old cylinder head bolts to weld onto exhausts to make brackets, it's quite common for the rear mount to break on the Focus too. Just bend the bolt, and the bolt head stops the rubber sliding off.

Doesn't surprise me that the same happens on the Focus. The S-Max's exhaust mount seems to be a bit different though. There's basically a metal bar that is (or was) attached to the box and that hooks into the rubber mount. The whole box is clearly knackered and needs a complete replacement anyway though so I might as well just do that tomorrow. Along with sorting out that damn parking sensor wire that's hanging around.

Excuse the horrendous bodge job with the wire, it's only to keep the exhaust held up at this point to stop it bending the pipe. Not planning on driving it anywhere like that :) You can see that the metal bar, still in the rubber mount, has just come completely away from the exhaust box which isn't surprising given the state of it. It's passed a couple of MOTs with an advisory for a corroded outer skin so I've known it's coming anyway.

Rebuilt my spare gearbox with a longer 6th gear a couple of weeks ago, finished putting it in the car today. Ran out of time to test drive so I'll go out in it in the morning.

I've got a chance of getting to Les Combes now without bouncing it off the limiter, in theory I reckon it's geared to about 140 odd and it might even have the power to get there.

I would have thought it would pull to 140. The MX5 pulls to the limiter in 5th which is as near as makes no difference 150mph and you've got more power

Good figure. How hard is it to get rid of heatsoaker top mount intercooler? Surely that would give you far better charge temps along with a bigger turbo? Never looked into Subaru's, always been into the enemy Evo haha. One of the best things (1st) I have done to my car is get rid of the top mount.

Quick question to those who might know - probably doesn't warrant it's own thread creation.

About two years ago I had a non-fault accident where someone clipped the rear quarter of my car (just in front of the rear wheels), their insurance company arranged to have it fixed at one of their insurance approved bodyshops. Over the last few months I've noticed a rust bubble forming underneath the strip that runs along the lower half of the car (car is an E46 330ci), after washing the car, the bubble has popped and left behind a rust spot. I'm worried it might spread and could be underneath the strip.

Obviously I'd like to get it sorted - who would I contact? The bodyshop that did the work, or the other insurance company?

Can get pics if needed. I don't think it's a stone chip judging by the location, would it be best to remove the strip and look myself or leave it to a garage?

cheers.

Have you still got the paperwork you signed when you picked the car up from the repairers? Most body's hops only provide a 12month warranty.

Not really needed you can quite easily make 400bhp on the stock STI top mount

I had a similar issue with my mums old car on her passenger side wing. Fortunately the repairer provided a 3 year warranty on all work so I contacted them with pictures and they took it back and redid the work for free. Always worth trying. No idea if it's just come back again though since we sold the car.

I can't imagine how often you must go under the bonnet to make that mod worthwhile :p

I do all my own servicing and maintenance, so quite useful :)

It also raises the bonnet higher, so improves access as well, which is also improved without the support strut being in the way all the time. Well worth £35 imho.

I fitted bonnet struts to my Scoob last year and wouldn't be without them now.

I'll echo Amiga's comments about the bonnet height and the support no longer being in the way. Also gives a bit more confidence when lifting the bonnet in the wind, knowing that it's not going to blow off the stand and smash into the windscreen.

Very worthwhile mod.

Looked into what's been causing the rear end to feel a bit twitchy this past few days..

Knew they were getting towards replacement, but I didn't expect to find that!
