1800X or 7700K ?

You can buy 6700ks for less than 280. A fair bit less TBH, but I'd still go with a Ryzen 1700. If the 6700/7700K come down to £200 and decent Z270 boards for around £100 then it's worth considering dropping the 4 cores and 8 threads on offer with the 1700.

Though going with Soc 1151 over AM4 would probably still be a mistake when Ryzen+ ships.

They are avaliable for not much more than the most overpriced 7600K's but that's still way to close to the 300 of a Ryzen.

I wouldn't buy an 1800X, I went for a 1700 Ryzen. For me 16 threads is what I wanted. I'm gambling on the fact that Vulkan and DX12 moving forward will be able to leverage the performance. Should mean it will go further than the 7700k will over the next 2-4 years.

Plus.... the AM4 platform will support the next 3 generations of Ryzen so you've got an upgrade path. Where a with Intel, you buy the 7700k you don't have much to upgrade too from there without a full on board and ram replacement.

Well I went with the 1800X, Thought I'd support team red for a change :)

Brilliant, It may just be a placebo but I swear some games "feel" smoother compared to the 5930K.

I overclocked it to 4Ghz using only 1.35v, Game and bench stable so far and using the new HWINFO which takes the 20'c offset into account the temps are amazing under a Corsair H110i GT.

Only problem is my 3000MHz Corsair LPX will not run at anything higher than 2133 even when setting timings and volts manually.

Yes, running a 480 till Vega in my AMD box and I use 60Hz with V-Sync so as long as min fps are not too low its not a problem. I game mostly on my Intel box as it has a FuryX, when Vega drops I will use the AMD box for games though.

In that case I wouldn't say it makes much difference for gaming (maybe 1600 has a slight edge). But as you do graphics work then I would absolutely say the 1600. Everybody's suggestions to just overclock a 1700 are good too though, unless you price difference doesn't matter to you.

Keep updating that bios.

In the meantime you can try increasing CPUSOC voltage to 1.15v or lower to try and gain stability. Ideally you want Samsung B Die dimms for easy plug and play at 3200 CL14.

I still use my 5930K as my main PC for work and its started feeling a bit sluggish, it’s not overclocked though but neither is the 1800X.

Yeah, I noticed the same, it's definitely not placebo. Everything feels smoother for me. It's kind of hard to describe. It's like I went from using my mouse on the desk to using it on a high quality cloth mouse mat! It runs everything as if nothing else is open, no hitches or slowdowns. Alt tabbing between games and apps is quick as a flash.

I have the same motherboard and the Corsair LPX ram, but only 16GB. I haven't tried to push the system yet, waiting for the May update before I do. But, I can run my memory at 2933 Mhz without changing anything else just leaving the rest on Auto.

Why would you need a new RAM replacement?....DDR4 will be around for ages used in multiple chipsets going forward. Plus Gen8 might actually be the LGA1151 socket....
