AMD VEGA confirmed for 2017 H1

Navi is 2018 at the earliest imo. I would be surprised if 7nm Navi shipped in H1 2018.

But if it looks like we will get Navi in 2018 I may hold off Vega and go Navi. Games I really want to play like Star Citizen, Cyberpunk 2077, System Shock 3, Shenmue 3, Resident Evil 2 Remake seem to be coming out 2018/2019. In the mean time I can make do with a R9 Nano which should be with me soon :D

She may have said tape-out, because that's what investors want to hear to give them confidence, but that's like saying the first prototype. It's a long way from a finished chip, and a long way from a commercial product where you have to make tens of thousands of them for customers. That's why you have to add at least six months before you can buy it.

Actually a lot of Developers did jump on it, but developing based on a new platform take years, not months.

That doesn't matter now, because those developers having started work with Mantle will simply end with Vulkan.

Wasn't one of the biggest headline hype points for Mantle how quickly it could be adopted/inserted into current projects? :p some developers expressed an interest in it but only a small number actually did anything actively with it and down the line most have expressed dissatisfaction with the model of DX12/Vulkan in contrast to what they were actually looking for.

What i get from most of there comments is that they don't want to put in the extra effort to get the best out of the new Api's. Why would i then want to invest my money in there lazy approach to games.

Largely game developers (1-2 aside) don't want to be reinventing the wheel when working with the day to day parts of the API - what game developers were actually asking for is an API that retains much of the abstraction layer of traditional APIs but with better ability to drop below the bonnet where needed. It isn't really an unreasonable ask or laziness.

As has often been seen it takes significant effort just to get the same results with DX12 as DX11 and while DX12 is certainly capable of much more the amount of understanding and resources required to utilise it to that extent is substantial.

Why are you trying to educate me on something I heard? The questions was from a member of the audience, they asked when 7nm was due to tape out, she said end of this year. I'd expect 6-12 months before they are ready for market.

I am not sure you understand what it means to actually build something with the magnitude of a game. This isn't about being lazy, trying to use a new API is very risky in this world. This doesn't mean you shouldn't spend time on trying new things, but it's not as simple as what you make it. Usually you can't see the really big flaws until you are quite deep in the development cycle, at which point you are screwed if you find that something important doesn't really work or is not that simple to use as you thought.

I'd bet on Navi being no closer than the last quarter of 2018 and more likely 2019.

I don't think anyone believes that Navi will be out next week. Considering though the importance of Navi, a multi chip solution bound through infinity fabric on 7nm, it's a huge step.

Fixed that for you ;). Seriously, I love the fact the AMD tend to innovate and bring new things, but their execution really needs to be fixed too. They can't be talking up Navi before they have Vega out. They can't be a year behind Nvidia, or behind on developer relations, or hyping everything up and not delivering, or all the other things they always seem to do to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Hopefully with Lisa allowing Raja to master his own fate and that of RTG, I'm hopeful things are changing. Vega is the first true test of that.

personally i believe that navi won't be that much work for AMD, since they already got the core (vega), and the memory HBCC/infinity fabric worked out, it's going to be all about the 7nm node, and the good thing is that AMD doesn't need a big sized die, so Navi might come pretty quick once the node and market allows it.
i also wonder if Nvidia is going the same route as AMD or are they going to stick with size pushing, because if they do, there is no way they will be able to compete with vega on perf/$.
