Pewdiepie racism

If he said it because it fits his beliefs, he's a racist idiot.
If he said it because lol gamer bantz, he's an ignorant idiot.
If her said it for clicks, he's a tiresome idiot.

It's like buying something from an ice cream van. You know you're getting ice cream, it's just about what flavour.

I think option 2 is the most likely with option 3 being the next plausible... though IF option 3 then I think there is at least a part of option 1 creeping in there given that it then isn't a slip up and he's willing to offend/hurt a big group of people just for clicks

while I don't particularly want to defend someone using the word other than in very limited situations I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that someone is obviously racist simply because they've used the word, I do think it is misguided/stupid to do so

Perhaps before posting you should read, listen and watch the context of how he used the N word (with a hard R) before turning apologist.

He used it in anger, he used the word to express his anger, he used it in a derogatory manner, meant as an insult to a fellow gamer. It wasn't a "hey what's up ma n###a" (not that, that would make it ok even in that context) but you would know that if you spent 30 seconds looking into it.

If you watch the video you can't defend how it was said, angrily with a hard R at the end. When he realised what he had said he tried to cover it but if anything made it worse

I always thought up to this point the pewdiepie racist crap was just people jumping on a bandwagon and missing the context of his comedy but you can't sugar coat this

I don't consider opinions regarding the pronunciation of an ending syllable of a word in English to be absolutely definitive as to which meaning is intended. While the pronunciation of the ending syllable is very important in determining meaning in some languages, English isn't one of them.

Insulting someone angrily isn't the same as racism, so I don't regard that as being absolutely definitive either.

That's what I'm disputing - the assumption that a single word (let alone a single syllable in a single word) is so much more important than everything else in determining meaning that nothing else matters. Maybe he's hugely racist, maybe he isn't. I don't know.

I'd agree with that.

It really is a big deal.

Just because people on COD say it due to anonymity that the internet gives them, doesn't suddenly make it an acceptable word because "Lolz"

Do you think that rape is considered acceptable because quite a few people use the word to mean something else? It seems particularly common in gaming.

I think the problem is the context how he used the word. It's not like he was joking with his black friends who he knows or singing along to a rap song. Both of those would have been fine, imo.
But he literally said it out of frustration and meant it as an insult. It's not like he even said it directed at a black person, he literally uses the word as an insult. I think that's the problem.

And I think that makes it less of a problem. If it's being used simply as an insult, it's not necessarily being used in a racist way. In a similar fashion, if someone says they entered an area in a game and got raped by ogres or whatever, they probably don't mean actual rape. 50 years ago there wouldn't have been any question about any use of the Magic Word being very racist. Today, there is.

Am I offended by him? Yes, but that was way before this. I just hate his entire presentation. Scream. Overreact. Shout gibberish. Profit.

I am surprised at how much profit he's made from overacting very badly. I'd rather watch videos of paint drying.

Racial slurs/humor was edgy in the 1970's before people woke up in the mid 80's and realised minorities were being stereotyped and marginalised as a result.

nah they were mainstream for stand up comics and not really edgy at all back then - there was even a TV show based on the premise of a black family moving in next door

to be fair to them the butt of the jokes was really supposed to be the ignorant white guy but taken at face value it isn't pretty and wouldn't get broadcast these days

(warning - obviously racial content but as it is a TV show from the 70s the 'n' word isn't used and these isn't any swearing - instead slightly softer racial terms are used)

however the below youtube video in the quote is (IMO) 'edgy' these days - not so much the two guys dropping the 'n' word, they're either racist morons or at least playing the part of racist morons but the ISIS joke/nasheed the asian girl plays when confronted by them is quite amusing, though also potentially a little bit offensive:

Its pewdipie no doubt he'll gain even more subs now who will watch his videos looking for that one mistake while earning him more cash.

Funny how this video from another twitch streamer playing the same game gets Ignored.

https://youtu.be/LIAOhjiBz_4

Yet the N word is repeated more than once and they even pretend to do a Isis style killing.

I disagree. I think him using the word as an insult mean he knows it has negative associations with it and he still chose that word to insult someone in anger.

I don't know about you but I have never, not once, let out a racial slur online due to anger. I May well say swear words but no racist term has ever left my lips whilst playing a game. The fact it came off his tongue in the heat of the moment suggests this is something he says often.

How come no one is questioning KSI? He's been recently doing a load of 'diss tracks' all which have the "N word" throughout them. If you even watch one of his latest videos he is doing a meet and greet at an event and he's there reciting one of the tracks with all of the kids. This is far clearer evidence of someone actually influencing the audience to using said language than PDP just having an outburst at his monitor.

Also all of you just proclaiming that he is racist simply for using the word, will all without doubt be guilty of such a crime to some extent. I refuse to believe that that of you haven't called something 'gay' or used another slur when something hasn't gone right etc. Does that make you homophobic or racist... no of course it doesn't. We are just taught that these words are bad so when something doesn't go as expected and you cry out that is a word that you use.

uh, isn't that the basis of virtually every insult? what's the point of using a word to insult someone if it's not going to offend them?

thus the word still has a lot of power... if the regular use of it had diminished that then this wouldn't be a news story
I completely agree with that, others just making videos about that just for clicks and self righteousness. This whole yt community is full of SJW and **********.

uh, isn't that the basis of virtually every insult? what's the point of using a word to insult someone if it's not going to offend them?

Because there is a difference between using a normal offensive word and using a word which is offensive to an entire race. Unless you're suggesting you're fine with people using historically racist words?

I'm guessing you would also find nothing wrong if rather than the N word he was shouting "****** few letters short of Pakistan"

When's the last time you called someone the N word in anger? Of all the words, why that one? Because he uses it behind the scenes, because he's not racist but sometimes cracks racist jokes with his close buddies. Because he meticulously cleans gym equipment after a black man used it but doesn't bother much if a white man did. Because some people are racist, they can't help themselves but they can n should keep their filthy mouths shut least.
