Just completed my TR build, so impressed with the performance so far, it's comparible to 4-way servers of just a couple of years ago, and probably most current 2-way boxes in terms of raw CPU and IO, extremely pleased with the amount of bang for my money on this build.
I was initially looking at a 1920X as didn't want to lower the core or thread count from my current system. Ended up choosing the 1950x as it didnt really add that much on the cost when spending nearly 2k, managed to find a bargain with the RAM at £355 as well!
I've kept my old PSU (Rm1000x) and case (Tt core v51), spec is now:
-Threadripper 1950X with Noctua nh-n14s
-Asus Prime X399-A
-64GB (8x8GB) Corsair LPX 2800 c14
-GTX 970
-250 Sammy 960 Evo M.2
-250 Sammy 959 Pro Sata
-Intel Pro Dual port NIC
Coming from the system below that I built from some scavenged server parts, I had to add quite a few bits to it over the years (Sata3/Usb3) to keep it reasonably usable as desktop, and I think the limits of PCIE 2.0, and lack of USB 3.1, M2 were starting to bug me, the lack of a full bandwidth x16 slot was also a pain.
- Dual Xeon x5660's (2.8/3.2 6c12t)
- Supermicro X8DTN-F
- 144 GB ECC 10600R
- GTX 970
- Samsung Pro SSD (250) Sata
- USB 3 card
- SATA 3 controller
New system goes though synthetic benchmarks at about 2-4 times the speed of the old system, real world performance for my workloads has easily doubled, and NVME somewhat makes up for less memory. Would have preferred to get 4x16GB when I did the build to allow me to upgrade to 128, but it was pretty much twice the price of 8x8GB for me, I quite like the dual Corsair airflow memory fans too!
Overall very impressed, same performance with Xeon would cost a fortune, though it would allow a much larger maximum memory size.
