My 10 year old daughter has a large claw hammer under here bed, but only due to her getting worry about how to get out of her room if there was a fire in the house blocking her exit, so she can now smash the window.

though if she were to use it on an attacker it is also rather useful from a legal pov for the item to have a dual purpose and simply be something you grabbed in the heat of the moment AFAIK
Would a 10 year old girl even be able to break a modern double or triple glazed window with a hammer?
I've got a Fairburn Sykes dagger in my bedroom, that's where it lives because I don't want it falling to anyone elses hands if they are in my house, welcome or unwelcome.
No she would not but she came home from a school trip one day & started to ask us about if there was a fire in the night down stairs how would she escape, so as she did have a point she now has a hammer.
If there was a fire the first thing I would do is try & save my kids so I would have access to the hammer anyway.
