Who here owns a Subaru?

Proper family wagon

Had anything done to it?

Love the Forester STi

Want to bring it to the rolling road day? :D

It's not a family wagon, i'll rarely use the rear seats :D. Truth be told I just liked the looks / rarity / performance combo, & the space will be handy for camping & road trips abroad.

I'd been looking for something a little more practical for a while & did consider a Legacy Spec B or a WRX wagon, but had to go for the Forester in the end. I think I read it only weighs 70kg more than the equivalent Impreza! It's surprising just how much of the platform is shared.
My one has a few nice extras - the winter pack so heated wiper park area & mirrors, & lost of Subaru dealer-fit bits - stainless boot sill trim/LED mirrors/wind deflectors etc.

I want to give it a full service & attend to any minor issues. The cambelt was done recently & the coolant looks very clean but i've no records of any other fluid services so will be doing the lot. From a brief look it appears the underseal may need attention too - it was done by the importer (Torque GT) but I can see some exposed blue paint in the wheel well.
The audio also needs sorting as it still has the OEM radio. I may retrofit cruise control too, either OEM if possible or an aftermarket.

This is my first Subaru - i'm not up to speed on all the model quirks yet but reading about it sounds like detonation is a frequent killer of pistons/head gaskets in the 2.5L engine, so one of the first things i'll likely do is a low volume water/meth injection system & an equal length header just to keep the cylinders balanced & the engine det-free.
I know I know - Sacrilege to lose the burble in the pursuit of optimisation!

If you believe the 2.0 owners it left the factory with its piston rings already destroyed.
well normally the first owners are morons and they seem to think 7krpm gear changes and donuts in the pub car park are part of the 5000 mile break in process :p really what they are doing is breaking the engine in 5000miles. this is why you see 1/2 of them have been rebuilt between 30-60k miles XD. on a stock 2.5 with a proper break in and change the old even mile or 2 they can last ages :p I havent seen a guy blow up 3 engines in less than 5k miles and get refused a new one on warrenty and i've also seen cars with over 100k miles on a original engine. I think the 2.0l are not affected by this as much cos the cylinder walls are thicker, so in the break in when the engine is getting hotter in localised areas it doesnt move as much. It also takes more energy to heat up more material.

Also as person who works in dimensional/metrology department, i have to wonder what tolerances are like on subaru engines as some seem great and others seem really bad. Also i guess the material quality and consistency plays a big part in these things too.

Here's a question i have (Yes, I am the noob!)

I purchased Discs, pads and brembos from a 2005 STI.

I am led to believe the 05+ are 5x114.3.

The seller told me these will fit both 5x114.3 and 5x100 (04 WRX fitment).

Is this correct? Or will i need to buy new discs?

Bit of a shame. Arguably inevitable. It's a shame because sales in the US are higher than ever.
its way worse than that even. The sti not being sold is just 1 model and trim that is getting axed. All diesels and all manuals (apart from the Brz) won't be available. :(

Pretty sure we won't have forester xt either so everything will be na petrol none turbo cvt.

Sadly most people in Europe have been wanting boring and expensive German cars for years for some reason. Now they want boring and expensive German electric cars :(

I don't know if this counts, as it was a plastic shell over an RC base. But, the only Subaru I've owned was one from Argos when I was around 10 in 2003. It was fast! So fast in fact that I couldn't use it indoors. It was great fun. :)

If it doesn't have a flat 4 it's a fake :p

Yeah very sad really. I think subaru has lost it tbh. The marketing is very poor and there model range has not really not really introduced the results the cars with the right engines.

The subaru UK YouTube channel is just terrible and a massive wasted opportunity. Just one of the many ways they aren't getting to people.

They are only losing here though. In the US and Australia Subaru is still very popular. They are great cars for Australia's environment.

But here people are put off by the running costs, Subaru's boxer engines look more expensive on paper. But In reality they are just more honest figures. The competition are posting comical ones which no one gets anywhere near, but the masses fall for it.

the WRX STI gets bad reviews over here, too old an engine, too harsh a ride, too basic inside bla bla bla rubbish............until you ACTUALLY drive it and then you suddenly realise just how good it is and the reviews wrong, it's always being compared very unfavourably to the Golf R and the Focus and this has killed its sales.
